Will be on windows XP system. Was thinking of putting two 1 Gig sticks of 3200 in. Not sure it will be worthwhile though when it comes to a system performance increase. 2 sticks of 512 should do just as well I assume. Getting carried away I guess...

One stick of 512 should be plenty with windows XP.

What exactly do you do on your comp to make you even THINK of wanting 2 gigs of ram? :x

Hello,

I think 2 gigs of ram is overkill for most people. One gig is more than enough for any game available today. Your better off waiting untill you really start to feel it. Then buy another stick, you'll save your self some money to.

since most current mobos now support dual channel...2 sticks IS the norm...

i would say 2x 256 for lightish use...
2x 512 for heavy use (gamming, PS, multimedia...)

2 gigs is overkill, 1 gig should suffice for quite a while. 512 mb is about the norm nowadays. It all depends on what your purpose is for the computer. High end games or anything concerning CAD, video editing, photo editing very large high resolution pictures would all be happy with a gig. Pretty much anything else will run good with 512 mb. 1 gb is future proofing your computer and by the time apps need 2 gb of memory it will be time to upgrade your computer with new memory and mother board and all that stuff. A rule I like to use is to look at what a company like Dell is offering in their high end models stock, which I believe is 512 mb, and I double it just to show them bastards who has the better system.

Only get two sticks if your mother board supports Dual Channel memory, other wise it may be cheaper just to get one stick.

Wouldn't 1x512 meg be reasonably decent for gaming. I do gaming on 3 systems - 2 of the have a paltry 256 megs and the other one has 512 and they don't run badly.

256 MB is okay for gaming, 512 MB is good. I don't think current games benefit from more than 512 MB RAM

WB hobbit. I'd go with 1GB. Yes, unlike these guys I HAVE seen a noticable increase in performance with 1GB as compared to 512MB, in fact a significant increase in video encoding performance.

I'm guessing you'll be putting that new AIW 9600 Pro in this system?

Ditto.
Every now and again i would dip into swapfile with winXP and 512mb.

With 1Gb it's just that little bit more creamy and smooth.

But anything beyond 1Gb is supreme overkill unles you are doing lots of rendering.

Video editing and gaming are my two biggest concerns. I think one gig will due fine. I was having one of those, "wouldnt it be cool if," moments. I dont want less than a gig though.
