I always thought that for servers (such as a 30 rig workstation internet server) you would want to run dual cpu's. But after reading the article "The Best of Both Worlds: Asus PC-DL with 875P Chipset for Intel's Xeon ", and looking at the benchmarks therein, it seems that you could very efectively use a server with a 3.2 P4 base and do just as well, if not better, and get off making a server for a WHOLE LOT less money.
Granted, the memory benches were in favor of the dual Xeons, but in just about every other bench, the 3.2 smoked the dual Xeon set-up.
Am I missing something here??? Is the 3.2 just as good of a choice to make a server out of as dual Xeons?? Besides saving a boat-load of money that is.

Yes. None of the benchmarks in that test were server benchmarks and you didn't notice the dual Xeons clearly outperforming the P4 in workstation tests. Testing Comanche 4 on a dual Xeon rig is all very well, but it hardly reflects real life usage. If you go to [link=http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030422/index.html]this review [/link] you can see how dual Xeons perfom in server and workstation benchmarks. But this still misses the point because servers generally demand much greater stability, memory and CPU throughput. Of course it depends entirely on what you need your server is for and in some situations where CPU and memory utilization is low and stability is not mission critical a P4 server could be appropriate.
