Why Is My PC So Slow?

First of all, i'd like to introduce myself and say hi.
When I first got this PC, I used to get 80+ FPS when i played Americas Army on max settings and 1280x1024. Now I am getting 12 on med settings and 1024x768.
The PC is of fairly decent spec. 3.4ghz Pentium 4 HT, 1.5gb DDR, Radeon x850xt and XP MCE 2005.
Personally I suspect that it's down to the processor. The CPU fan fell off so i'm thinking that it got damaged with the heat. This is a brand new install of xp aswel (installed yesterday) so I know it's not the OS full of crap doing it. And I can't see no reason why the gfx card is damaged.
Also when I run a standard MP map I get 12 fps. If I run a map against the AI i'm lucky to get 2. I used to get 50+fps with an AI map.
I'm building a new PC that will be ready in a couple of months. But if it is the processor than I can buy and old P4 from somewhere and use it for a little while.
Thanks.

Hmmm.. Wrong place to ask but I'll throw in my suggestion. If the fan fell off have you put it back on correctly? The P4 would throttle the speed it ran at if it started to overheat. Try cleaning and re-installing the cooler and see if it helps. Maybe even install one of the monitor programs like CPU-Z or Real Temp to have a look and see what is going on.

Thanks for your replies. I forgot to mention that when the cpu fan came off, i removed the heat sink, cleaned out any dust, applied thermal paste and put it all back together.
I was playing Americas Army earlier today, I was getting 12 fps but i noticed that the cpu wasn't being used 100% (LCD display on my G15).
If I you're not bored yet i'll go into more detail. I was using a Vista install the other day on it and I was getting 30fps. I can't understand why it's 3 times lower on XP. This PC was designed for XP. However I did make a couple of hardware changes aswell.
1. My CPU fan was abnormally loud. It used to be silent. So I replaced it with another fan but I don't think it's as efficient.
2. I stuck the PSU out of my new build into it. The old PSU was an unbranded 300w. I thought that the lack of power might be the reason why it was running slow. So I stuck my new 700w CoolerMaster Silent M into it. I hoped that the large fan in it would help compensate for the slower CPU fan. Although i'm not entirely sure it's slower. I also tidyied the case a little but to increase airflow.
3. I installed a DVD drive. Yeah I had no disk drives installed lol.
Now into even more detail:
I installed Far Cry last night. This game is roughly the same age as my PC and was a demanding game for it's time. I had the game on max settings, full AA, full AF and at a resolution of 1440x900. Outdoors I was getting at the lowest 15 fps. Indoors I was getting 50+ FPS.
Also this Americas Army install has been used on 3 different versions of windows (yeah I shouldn't do that lol). It was origionally installed on my laptop. The download was 2gb so I copied the whole folder over to my HDD (is it possible that it was optimised to work with my laptop the first time it was installed?). The it was used with Vista on my desktop and now XP on my desktop. Do you think re-downloading AAO and re-installing it might just work?
Thanks
EDIT: Btw, was getting similar FPS on my laptop at the same settings on AAO. My laptop is Core Duo 1.6ghz, 1gb DDR2 Ram, Intel 945 Gfx and Vista HP.
Also could a moderator please move this to the appropiate thread?

Use a program like RealTemp, CoreTemp, or SpeedFan to check your temperatures. If they look ok, download Prime95 and let it run for a while. If your temperatures skyrocket, then your heatsink isn't on properly.
If you still have the Americas Army install files then copy them over to make a new install; very few games like being transferred just by copying the folder.
As for the difference in indoor and outdoor frame rates in FarCry, that's normal. The amount of things your graphics card has to render inside is much much less than outside (outside you have shadows, reflections, depth of field, etc etc etc on everything between you and the horizon, or wherever your settings stop rendering)

Which do you think takes longer to infect?
a. A clean install that's still patching to the latest version.
b. An established install with AV/Malware protection.
What's the bet the data drive moved over from an existing rig?? Not saying it IS a virus, just don't rule it out on the basis of a 'clean' install...

Hello!
As You know yourself in most laptops the low fps is "normal" (integrated graphics, slower hdd etc.)
About desktop : do you checked GFX PCI-E not dropdown from x16 state to 4x for example (i had situation once), or check Gfx card power cord (i think you had done it)
Usually comps come slow, if the CD/DVD are installed on the same IDE port with HDD (sorry i aint now You use SATA or IDE)
And of course, as mentioned before : check out all are correct drivers (sometimes the newest aren't the best)
And after all : to Be safe you can allways check for viruses online (better it do through router/firewall)

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/langua...
Uninstalling unnecessary programs/services...
Maybe its not bad to check out useless/important services :

Good luck

I recommend checking for viruses, defraging your PC(mostly the drive where your game is located in),dusting out your computer, and if all else fails, you have to reformat you whole PC reinstalling windows and drivers and try then, but you may try this fix here that I really dont how come this worked and not the other fixes,I changed my screen resolution from 1280x768 to 1024x768.This didnt just fix up the slow down,it also fixed another problem I had, every game I played afer a random amount of time started to slowdown from 1-5 minutes to 2-3 hours, going from stable 40 fps to 10-20 fps,I tried numerous fixes that obviously did speed up my computer, but did now help me with the slowdowns, besides those,I suffered also from severe freezes in other games (mostly Star-Craft 2),I thought it was something with my RAM,or Page File,I actually opened my PC up and dusted it out (well, there was no dust there actually),so it was not something with overheating,I tried adding all my games on the exception list from ffdshow, did not do anything sadly, then when i was ready to give up,i noticed how huge the resolution was (maybe my brother fidled with it when it was his PC,he buyed a laptop so i got this one),so i changed it to my favorie 1024x768,and suddenly everything ran perfectly.
Oh and my PC specs are here:
Processor:AMD le-1640 2.6 Gbhertz rated at 3.9 Gbhertz
Ram:2 Gigs
Video Card:Nvidia Geforce 9300 GS 512 MB
Sound Card:Realtek Audio
Remember to tell the others that have the random slowdown issue or the general slowdown issue to try atleast to lower their screen-resolution...
