Restoring XPS_T from scratch

I have a friend who is not really PC literate and his hard disk on his
Dimension XPS_T crashed. He says that he received no CDs when he purchased
the PC directly from Dell and he therefore has no backups. What does he need
to restore his original configuration, and is everything available from Dell
without charge? Thanks in advance.

dell does not provide replacement cds. the serial number for the operating
system that came with the unit is listed on a sticker that is on the side of
the cpu 'box'. you can use a friends oem dell operating system cd with the
serial number but you can not use the serial number with retail versions
(purchase at a store in a retail box) of the same version of the operating
system. you friend will have to obtain replacement application, antivirus,
etc software.

You need an operating system CD and a valid Certificate of Authentication to get
the system to a certain point. After that, you may well need to download
drivers for the motherboard to match the operating system. If Microsoft Office
or some other software was installed originally, you'd need the CDs for those
software products as well.

Don't look to Dell for any help. You won't get any. The system is long out of
warranty... Ben Myers

Just to add to Chris and Ben:

He did get the CDs from Dell when he bought it. He probably doesn't remember
and misplaced them. Either that or he didn't know what they were and
discarded them.

Legally, he's screwed. Illegally, he can load any copy of '98SE on the hard
drive and it should work perfectly.
All the driver files he'll need can be found on the Dell filelibrary
website. Just use the system's service tag and the original configuration
will show up.
Also, check THAT original config for the dell part numbers, and then if
you'd like a shortcut, check here:
http://personalpages.tds.net/~rcsilk/files/drivers.txt and you'll be able to
look up all the exact files and locations, in something of a personal
shorthand notation. But it should give you lots of clues.
