It keeps up quite well with P4 3.0 GHz

Word of advice: If the chipset is labeled "Ali" avoid it like the plague.

I don't want a crappy shortlived 754 pin mobo anyways.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

So is this or not a 2GHZ CPU?

I am not impressed though. The 3400+ better be significantly better. Heck they did not directly include the P4 3GHZ so I found the article rather pointless. In fact, a site that actually receives A64s already, should perhaps bench it rather than bench the less important chipset-mobos, especially in the current situation!

Though not impressive, it's not bad considering it's rated 2900+

*UFO_WARVIPER smashes 10 ALi mobo chipset boards!* It would be best if we waited until an Via or Nvidia chipset boards arrived for the K8 A64 m. I'm hardly remotely interested in the 754 pin A64 and probably reccomend it to no one. Its sad too, considering that I'm usually an AMD supporter. I just simply can't justify paying a premium price for a platform that will die in 6 months to a year. I'll still be reccomending Socket A AXPs for low to mid-range users, and upperclass P4's to high-end performance freaks until the 939 pin A64 platform arrives. I also think it was very stupid of AMD to port 32-bit AXPs to the 754 pin K8 platform. It's like AMD had a big dick (I'm obviously influenced by the "other" section) to boast about (rightfully) with 64-bit technology advantage, and then severe their own dick by rehashing 32-bit technology on a 64-bit capable platform. The only way my feelings will change about the subject is if 754 pin K8 boards with a decent chipset are sold at rock-bottom price points.

Excuse me for my rant.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

ALi chipsets have nothing to do with performance, since A64s have on-die memory controller.

I'm also not recommending 754 pin A64s.

As far as the socket format goes, the Athlon64 will use a 754 pin config. The 940 pin is for the A64 Opteron server chip (with ecc) The upcoming A64 opteron desktop chip (with no ecc support) will use the 939 pin socket. It is my guess that some intel fanboy is trying to muddy the water by saying that all chips are for the Athlon64. While the Athlon64 and the opteron are bothe A64 chips, they are different.

Thats a good point actually...
I cant see much difference between A64 chipsets as most of the important stuff is directly between the CPU and the memory now.

Only real thing they can do is optimise the southbridge link/latency.

ALi often makes better chipsets than VIA, but you don't see any high quality boards using them since they aren't popular.

The northbridge is just a rebaged AMD chip, the southbridge is the only thing made by ALi, and mostly all problems associated with chipsets come from the northbridge

so what's the use of making chipsets for AMD A64, if that's the case. FSB?

My Ali Aladin V chipset based mobo (Gigabyte GA-5AA) was way better than my friends' VIA MVP3 based mobo.

A64 southbridge has the AGP controller and communicates with southbridge, just like any other northbridge chipsets. The only difference is- they don't have memory controller.

A64s don't have FSB

Hummm... They putted link to the P4 benchmark. It's easy to click and compare. But, it would have been better to add P4 benchs in the same graph.

A64s don't have FSB

THis means that the speed of the FSB of A64 is equal to that of the speed of the cpu.

Yes, and compare it to the MVP3, the "fastest" Super 7 chipset. The MVP3 had so many bugs it wouldn't even run half my hardware.

No, the CPU bus works at HyperTransport speed.

THese are chipsets for the Super Socket7 platform. That was ages ago. I'm talking about more current ALi Magik 1 boards that support both DDR & SD-RAM. Even SiS had a better chipset that supported both types of RAM. Even the old AMD760 chipset could be an ALi Magik 1 board.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

MAGiK 1 was an OK chipset, just the boards were garbage. The 3rd revision was actually an excellent chipset. And the SiS 735 chipset was of course better, it certainly was faster than the KT266.

UFO_Warviper you are right. ALI Sucks for performance. If you want a crappy board go for ALI. My friend built a Athlon 1.4 a year or so ago and bought the KD266 board withe the ALI chipset. It was the cheapest board he could have put on there. I was somewhat disapointed in his purchase.

Let me take this moment to remind everyone that Asus, Abit, and MSI were all forced to withhold the release of their 735 chipset boards after VIA threatened to withhold/delay shipments to any manufacturer using it.
