Not bad there, but this is Inq. I was pretty amazed at the first results, until they came about the SSE2. I thought Opteron chips 246 had an SSE2 core update, so I assumed it applied to Athlon FX 64s.

Nevertheless, I am still not gonna jump, if this thing cannot deliver in SSE2, then the A64 is only for gaming, while the Intel is an all-arounder so far. A64 NEEDS HT, it NEEDS it.

That is quite suspicious isn't it? You'd think a chip that's suppose to be announced in October would have more hype being built around it, with all sorts of numbers flying around.
But then again, Intel has never done that, with any processor before the NDA is up.

18% faster in UT2k3, seems that AMD A64 is more optimized with direct3d games.

The latest reports are nice in that they are showing positive results rather than negative results. I'd much rather have a competitor than a poor product.

Intel developed SSE2, so they should have the better implementation by being the creators. I say we are lucky enough AMD is implementing it.

Prescott isn't out yet and I bet there's some sort of strict policy Intel has about releasing media on unreleased products. Don't forget, Intel has the whole TV commercial marketing logo/sound whenever some company like gateway or dell mentions their product.

I would also be interested in seeing software running on A64 optimized code and not just legacy 32bit code. I think that might also have some interesting results.

SSE2 scores are based on throughput, so intel, with thier faster throughput rate, will always take top scores. However even the most strict SSE2 apps have transitions. That is where the ability to compute gives Amd the advantage.
Yah intel promised Amd they would lend a prescott chip for comparison, but backed out at the last minute. NOT!!!

And again, The Inquirer failed to give any specs. What chipset was used? Who manufactured the mobo? How much RAM? What speed of RAM? A lot of relevant info was left out. I'll trust numbers when they back it up with specs.

<<Who cares if A64 FX beats 3.2Ghz P4 NW? It has to compete against prescott...>>

yeah when prescott is released in volume in the spring of 04

Exactly.

In spring of '04 when Scotty is shipping in volume to thousands (millions?) of happy people what will <i>you</i> be comparing Scotty to?

How about this headline:

Athlon 64 FX beats P4 3.2 GHz in almost every way except in 3dmark03, pcmark03 (which btw doesn't exist), SSE2 and 3ds max.

"in every way"...? whatever

Hype or overexcitement?

Oddly enough, that's still way before <A HREF="http://news.com.com/2100-1006_3-5067917.html?tag=fd_lede1_hed" target="_new">AMD expects</A> to produce the A64 in volume (when they switch to 90 nm, probably Q3-Q4 2004). September 23 will essentially be a paper launch, considering the pricing of these chips.

Prescotts won't cost $100. They will cost $600+ like Athlon 64 FX.

Don't know about you, but I'm laughing at everyone who seems emotionally attached to a <i>piece of silicon & metal</i>, which <i>hasn't even been released yet</i>..

HA HA HA.... It's quite sad really...

AMD fanboy! :)
Well i'm an Intelliot. But if AMD can prove theirselves to me (and when it's out) that A64 will kick Intel-butt-.
Then i'll go their way for awhile until Intel will have chance in gaining the cpu crown again.
