Well the TZ clock is still causing grief. I have a new tested board
that works. Here is the funny thing. If I run the clock test with the
playfield upright, everything is fine. If I run the clock test with
the playfield up on the coin door panel everything is fine. If I run
the clock test with the playfield hovering one inch above its resting
playing position everything is fine. If I set the playfield in the
playing position, the 45 minute opto never registers? I checked to see
if any wires were being crimped or pulled when the playfield is down,
but this is not the case. Any ideas?

Thanks again

The minute opto interrupter is floating on the gear shaft. Add a small
bit of plastic to the tab, or gently bend the arm in after warming it
up. A more correct solution is to resolder the opto a liffte higher
off the board.

All switches are working fine, I checked. I just tried running the
clock tests with the clock in my hand. When I hold the clock with the
face tilted slightly up or flat, all optos register. If I tilt the
face down just past flat, the 45 opto fails. If I hold it facing down
at a drastic angle, all the optos fail. I think If I adjust the clock
slightly upright, the problem will resolve. However, I am curious why
a slight angle change causes this difference. I know optos can be
touchy, but I didn't think orientation would have any effect.

Poor connection on a switch somewhere, clock optos are part of the switch
matrix. Check the row and column the clock optos are on and narrow down the
switches to check. Be sure connectors to boards in the head are tight, and
no stray light hitting the clock optos. LTG :)

Grab the minute hand and try pulling it in and out of the enclosure gently.
If there is any play, this could be the reason for the difference between
the playfield being up or down. When up, the hand (and shaft) slide back
into the enclosure, thereby moving the hand closer to the clockface, thereby
allowing the hand to pass through all of the optos properly. Drop the
playfield and eventually the hand (and shaft) slides slightly forward (due
to playfield tilt), thereby preventing the hand from activating the optos.

You need to get rid of the minute hand play to solve the problem. One way is
to replace the plastic spacers holding the two circuit boards together - or
like I did, replace them with metal bolts and lock nuts (hint: use a lock
nut also as a spacer between the two boards- fits perfectly).

The clock is fixed! I put a washer in between the board and housing to
lift the 45 minute opto a bit, and then placed a tiny spacer in front
of the minute hand to reduce play. The clock is now working. Thanks
for all your responses. Now I just need to find and replace the BR on
my fliptronics board and my TZ will be 100%.

1) Poor/intermittent connection on the 2 small connectors hooking underneath
the clock housing
2) Minute hand not clearing the optos
3) 10 Opto board underneath the playfield - check the connections there
4) Connections on the switches on CPU board (bottom of the board)

It requires a little investigating, this should narrow it down. Post back
the results or any other findings you get.

That's good. I'm glad you got it going. Bay Area Amusements had bridge
rectifiers on sale, around 1, 75 I think, also www.pinballlife.com has them
too, 400 as opposed to 200, I believe, similar prices, both fine places to
buy stuff from, both ship very fast and are great to deal with. Best of
luck.
