I have pretty much decided to buy a Dell 8400 (for developing
multimedia etc) from www.dell.co.uk, but after customising it recently
it came to a whopping £1200+ (I am an impoverished student!)
However, I am told that it is likely to go down considerably in price
towards mid January. Can anybody confirm that this is likely to happen
from past experience?!
Anybody know what the delivery time is like? I suppose it could take a
while if i order now in the run up to Christmas. :(

At least in the US, the end of January is the end of a quarter, so they
have good prices. This happens at the end of each quarter.

Not necessarily here in the UK.

I bought a Inspiron 1150 several months ago and its now £200 ( ish )
dearer as they had a good deal on when I bought it.

I keep an eye on the UK site and prices / specification of laptops
change regularly.

Elise just go for it and youll have a nice pressie to yourself for
Xmas )

You know how rapidly PCs move from the leading edge to the trailing edge.
Today's cheapest Dells are as good as yesterday's top of the line. Maybe a
cheaper Dell would do the trick?

You can have a good idea of when the next Dells will come out based upon the
Intel road map:

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2256

This indicates the new Intel processors (faster, with bigger cache) coming
out in the first quarter of 2005. Presumably when Dell starts shipping
these, it will push the current high-end down a notch, with a corresponding
price reduction. Of course, when that happens, you'll want the new machines.

You may want to check out their refurbished store. There may be a
similar dell for less money. I've bought 2 pc's there at different
times and to me, they look like new but they say refurbished and
still come a warantee. But I think you still have to compare the new
to the refurbished pricing because both sides can change in one or the
other favor daily.

End of January is not just the end of a quarter but the end of the fiscal year
for Dell. Got a super deal last January on a 4600 and so did my folks and two
of my friends.
