oem restore disk

Well I just received my computer yesterday and after the sales person and a
tech support person assured me there would be an OEM Windows disk - there
isn't. What came is a medialess system where you make your own restore
disk. However the only option is still to restore as is. There is a
restore partition (that I don't want), a "do more with Gateway" advertising,
AOL etc on the drive. The applications however were not all installed.
(Works, money) Nero is. SO if I want to keep that, NO customized installs
of windows. I did "uninstall" AOL , then checked the registry and there are
several references to AOL still there. I could edit out the obvious ones,
but what about the ones I am not sure came with AOL. I should be allowed to
NOT install what I don't want.
I plan to call the sales person today and see what he can do. I also had
asked about media center and was told none available. Now as of the 18th,
it is - the same system basically I ordered and had not received until
yesterday. I called and the only way to get it is to return this system and
reorder. As it was it took 3 weeks to get it. In fact it shipped the same
day as media center release. Also It shipped on the 18th, I received on the
26th, yet my warranty expires on the 18th. 8 days isn't a big deal, unless
something happens in those last 8 days.

The registry is the Windows septic system. And either Micro$oft provides
incomplete information for uninstalling software or software vendors are too
darn lazy to do a complete job of the uninstall. Probably both.

To save time and do something constructive...

1. Live with the restore partition.
2. Quick! Make a restore CD, if you haven't done so already.
3. Call Gateway and insist on the media center, if you really want it.
4. Threaten to return the system unless you receive the media center stuff
within a reasonable period (10 days to 2 weeks?).
5. If you return the system, buy another brand... Ben Myers

Unfortunately, it looks like all the manufactures are doing the restore
partition/make your own discs scheme. It started with HP/Compaq, then Sony
and now Gateway and Dell. Just another reason to build your own or have it
locally built.

Why not just get Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image and then just
image the drive?
I use Acronis True Image 8 and it works... you can make an emergency
boot CD and the boot from it and restore the entire hard drive...

The problem isn't making the image or using an image. The problem is that I
can't easily (using GW restore or original config) GET an image I want. I
formatted the drive, and reinstalled from the image and yes the junk is
there. However not all of it. Then if you use the recovery, it does allow
to reinstall some of the limited applications and drivers. SO I would have
to install then uninstall, which leaves registry traces, then create my own
image. The drive is apparently cleaned but not the registry.
