Touch pad, if that is what it is called

How do I turn the touch pad off on my laptop using XP so that, when using a
mouse, inadvertently brushing across the pad the curser is not moved

A friend, running a Mac laptop on OSX, has no problem - as soon as the mouse
is plugged in the touch pad is deactivated

Any suggestions - I have looked every where I can think of

It's likely an advanced function of BIOS setup. There will be an option
named something like "Pointing Control/Mouse". From here you can
set the Touchpad & simultaneous mouse options. Usually set to Auto,
and with a PS/2-USB mouse the touchpad will be disabled. It can also
be controlled by the Touchpad Watchdog applet (By time display). If
it's Synaptics there is usually a control option for use with a mouse.

Hello , I have an H/P Pavillion Labtop 2003 model ... and there is a button
just above the touchpad . Just below this button is the on/off indicator
which lights up blue when turned on . Starting the PC always activates the
touchpad .

This varies from one laptop to the next. As Mr or Ms McCarty
suggested, it may be a BIOS setting. (Watch the screen when booting,
and press whatever key it says to "enter setup").

It could also be a real-time keyboard function. For instance, on my
Acer laptop it's Fn+F7. Your laptop owner's manual should tell you
how to do this.

A third possibility is to turn it off in Device Manager -- look
under Mouse or Human Interface Device and you can disable it from a
hardware profile or from all hardware profiles.
