I have an intermittent problem with XP not recognising USB devices.

Knowledge Base Article 892050 says a HotFix is available.

However, when I try to obtain it, I am told this will cost me £35

Is this right?

"In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may
be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific
update will resolve your problem."

Hi,

No, it should not cost you anything.

As the article states, you need to call Microsoft Product Support Services to
obtain it (outside the US, customers should contact their local Microsoft
subsidiary.). The support call will be be free as long as you refer to the
Knowledge Base Article number (892050) and ask for nothing more.

You will need to find the phone number from here:
;CNTACTMS]http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS

In the wizard, Select WinXP, and Basic, and then "It was purchased separately"

For USA, use phone number 425-635-3311
