Why does my computer say my printer is disconnected if its plugged in>

So I have a hp photosmart printer scan and copy but all of a sudden it wont let me print from the computer it says its disconnected but everything is plugged in i tried downloading the disk again but it still wont work how do i get it to print from my computer?

Do you have the printer connected via an external USB hub ? Plug it in direct using the sockets at the rear of the computer rather than any front mounted USB sockets.

completely uninstall all hp software and drivers, reboot computer, reinstall it again.
