I am happy enough with XP for the time being, but can see myself changing over to Windows 7 in a few months or up to a year.

Would it be a good idea to buy a discounted (UK) version of 7 now; to be installed in the future?

Welcome to the forums!

Defiantly pre-order Win7 now while it is cheap!
You are pretty lucky over there, most of the world is only getting the crappy upgrade version for 50(insert local currency).
You, however, would get a standard instillation for that price (No Windows 7 Upgrades for Europe).
Defiantly get it now rather than paying twice as much or more later.

Nothing "crappy" about the upgrade... you can still perform clean installs with the upgrade media and you have a full retail flexibility with OEM pricing. I pre-ordered the upgrade because I simply could not resist the price. I ordered Home for the laptop and Pro for the desktop. I would have liked to get Ultimate... but it seems Vista Ultimate users have been left out in the cold when it comes to upgrading to Windows 7.

Oh well... at least I'm not missing much.
