a problem im having is that with mandrake the desktop would creep along like i was running an old old computer. red hat seems a bit faster, but even the tuxracer app runs really incredibly slowly. it shouldnt be that slow with the system i have, (or does it not matter sometimes?):

Pentium 4 2.26 Ghz
Gigabyte-8IEXP
256MB DDR266
Abit Siluro Geforce 4 Ti4600

also, i cant get any sound to work... i thought i read about a sndcfg utility, if thats what i need to do? where is it? and if not what should i do?

Creative SoundBlaster Audigy

any and all help is appreciated<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by frailimbnursry on 09/14/02 02:20 PM.</EM></FONT></P>

I have no experience with mandrake, but...

Check what video driver you use in XFree86, if you use wrong driver, you might get degraded performance.

For sound you could try Alsa (http://www.alsa-project.org/).

Which version are you using?

For 3d apps, you need the nvidia drivers from <A HREF="http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_1.0-3123" target="_new">http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_1.0-3123</A>. For audigy, check <A HREF="http://opensource.creative.com/" target="_new">http://opensource.creative.com/</A>

I guess there could be other reasons for a slow desktop, but you would need to run "top" or another process monitor to see if anything is eating up your CPU.

<i>Do I look like I care?</i>

Are you absolutely sure they're installed properly. It takes some doing sometimes. Can you tell us how many fps you're getting in gears? (My GF2 GTS runs gears at over 1000 fps IIRC)
