Need some opinions:

I'm not much of a gamer
I'm a crazy mulitasker:
I'm a web developer, photoshop, flash, maya, max etc.

What would be the best system to build for this

a dual AMD MP say 2600 or so or a P4 2.6 w/Hyper Threading or should I wait for something bigger and better if so what should i wait for.

I'm torn and I cant find any anwers I'm looking for. Gamers no matter what tell me AMD, and others say the P4 ostly I just want something that will last me a few years.

im more interested in the multitasking aspect, i want something that will last thats and keep chuging along, I have had a dual p3 550 for the past 5 years with scsi and 512k pc133. It starting to get slower and slower but I've definalty enjoyed it, but I want a new setup that would match what i had 5 years ago with that, if that makes sence.

Try http://www.2cpu.com They seem to know a lot about dual platforms. I don't know about a P4 with hyper threading but I have a dual 1500 Athlon MP, and it works great for the multitasking stuff I do - little photoshop and listen to MP3s etc. Doesn't skip a beat when ripping MP3s or CD burning while doing other things. Plus I think most of those programs you mentioned are optimized for dual processors.

Well i would say the best up-and-comming multitasking system would have to be a 2 4 or 8 way Opteron system.

They should be retailing soonish... not too long to wait.

The true power of the opteron is its excellent Floating point performance, extreemly low memory latency and excellent dual cpu scaling.

Or save money on a P4 with Hyperthreading. It won't work as well as two processors, but it multitasks better than single-processor systems and runs single-threaded software at it's full potential.

Life is all about choices. We can suggest a million options, but in the end you have to choose. The only way to do that well is to do the research for yourself. :)
