Dimension 4700--any problems with adding a pci-e video card?

Thinking about purchasing a dimension 4700. Have heard the x300se card
offered is pretty weak, so am considering ordering one with onboard
graphics and adding an x600pro or x600xt card. Has anyone here done
this; should I expect any problems (bios, power supply etc.) or is it
a "slam dunk"? Thanks.

Hello,

You shouldn't have any problem with adding the PCI video card to your
4700 system.

Good luck with your upgrade

You mean PCI-X, right? PCI wouldn't be the right choice.

Nope, you're wrong.

PCI express x16. The 4700 should handle it with no problem.

Sorry, I meant PCI Express. It's PCI-E? I thought it was PCI-X.

Tom,

No problems here, bud. PCI express and PCI x are two different animals.
Google it if you want. Guaranteed to make your eyes glaze over.

I made the same slip in a post a week or two ago.

The 4700 (and 8400, I think) have an x16 slot for video, and an x1 (I
believe) that's some CNR/or smart card reader notch slot. I've not seen the
smaller slot in use yet, but I expect to soon enough. The smaller slot is on
the opposite end of the PCI slots from the video slot.

The engineers who dream up these formats aren't really concerned about
clarity in terminology for the end user it seems.

Happy holidays.

Just installed a X700 into a 4700. It will automatically detect the card. No
BIOS settings to adjust (it's set on auto detect).
Install the drivers and that's it.

PCIXx is PCI Extended
PCI-E is PCI-Express
