Is there a valid SMS certification, or are the classes just part of the MCSE

SMS exam is part of MCSE track.
Maybe in the future will be different specializations

But it is BETA exam:
Exam 70-089: Planning, Deploying, and Managing Microsoft Systems Management
Server 2003
