My daughters Dell computer is running Windows XP home edition. I recently
tried to install a virus program, which failed miserably (was a free program
offered by my ISP- Adelphia).
Since that time, she is stuck in Windows Classic even though it is set to
show WIndows XP. In addition, I needed to check something in the in system
properties. When I clicked on device manager, not one device showed up. This
has me totally puzzled. Any help?

If recently is say within the last 7-10 days, I would try a System Restore.
Generally speaking I always discourage users from installing ISP software.
(Unless connections must be made using it). You're better off using XP
native functions and tools. (Internet Explorer, Outlook Express). I just
fixed a PC that had Verizon.net software and had all sorts of Java type
viruses and plenty of Spyware on it. Your ISP provides connectivity &
email - you should make your own decisions on Security/Privacy tools.

Hi,

The failure to install an AV application may be due to the system already
being infected. Free virus removal tools:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/8/lng/ [...] /3001#3001
http://www.f-secure.com/download-purchase/tools.shtml

Also, you may use this free on-line scanner:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Many are best run in Safe mode to minimize interference. Most will resist
removal in normal mode where they are active.

How to start in Safe mode:
