Is there a software benchmark test to quantify how good (or not so
good) a computers overall performance is?

In the DOS days, we used PCTOOLS.

I don't see much chatter about benchmarks these days. Is that because
there isn't a benchmark available?

Thanks,

T

Still done.. Not as often because more options are readily available to
customize a machine so you know it will work well for your needs before you
buy it.

Since overall PC performance has risen so much, it's probably
no longer a big issue except for the "Gamers". I use PCPitStop
as a general test for PCs. It give a numerical score, but has a
rating that compares your hardware to similar platforms. It can
isolate specific areas where performance lags (Disk, Video,...).
I do use a number of drive benchmarking tools as that is still the
biggest bottleneck on most PCs.

SiSoft Sandra is a good app to benchmark your system, it has comparitive
results from other systems so you can gauge the performance of your system.
