too much processor, not enough mobo?

Hi, I'm a complete novice at this stuff, so if this is a very ignorant question, please forgive me.

I have a Shuttle Spacewalker AK31 motherboard. My current chip is the Athlon Thunderbird 1.1Ghz.

The board's manual states that it
"Support Socket462 package CPU with 200/266MHz FSB.
AMD Athlon Processor: 600 ~ 1.33+ GHz."

Now, if I were to install the 1.4Ghz Athlon XP 1600+ Thoroughbred (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=586538&Sku=CP2-XP1600TBC&CatId=256)...

what would happen? Would it work? Would it not boot up? Would it condemn my soul to the nether regions of hell?

(Sorry for the double post).

It should work fine. I know such boards supported the T-bird 1400/266.

you could try it - It'll probably work with a BIOS update (might work without one) but I wouldn't bother if I were you - It's not that much of an upgrade really, I doubt you'll see that much improvement for most tasks. You'll be better off saving the money and swapping out your mobo, RAM, & CPU all at the same time, you'll get a much larger improvement.

Well, maybe we should ask first what are is he/she usually running the computer for. Then maybe the advice can be more accurate. It's obvious that changing almost everything it will run faster ... but even changing all that you says implies continue with the same GPU. Maybe THAT's the problem ...

So Deadfuse, what are you looking for? What you want to do with your computer? Why you think you need more power?

Still looking for a good online retailer in Spain :frown:
