Speed thru proxy server or direct? Which one wins?

Hello, All! One of the reasons advocated for using proxies is to speed
surfing via accessing cached material on remote proxy servers. This makes
sense but I have also heard that it slows you down...presumably if material
is not cached and because you are dependent on yet another server to deliver
info. In practical terms which one wins?

I appreciate any help or insights you all might offer. My System PIII,256mb,
WinXP Pro Sp2, NAV2004, Kerio, Dial-up.

With best regards, Brother Brock. E-mail: Nobodyknows@unknown.com

Any delay introduced by the proxy is not likely to be noticed
UNLESS it's serving lots of users simultaneously...the speed of your
Internet
connection (in your case-dial up) is likely to be FAR less than that of the
10/100 network
that the proxy is pushing stuff through and should be the limiting factor.

And I do notice the speed boost that a cached page gets (running
WinProxy for about 6 years now on a 3 -10 user network) if it
hasn't changed since the last visit.

Browsers have caches as well, but in a situation where a proxy is dishing
things up, you can minimize it and let the proxy store all the content
centrally, where it's easier to administer.

Bottom line, I guess, is that if you're a single-user, just make your
browser cache as big as possible, and make sure you have it set
to not be emptied when you exit the browser. You *probably* won't
see a noticeable increase in speed by running a proxy.
