hi i just built a
asus a7v8x-x
asus gforce4 5200 mx <crap>
amd athlon xp 2600
512 ddr 333
80 gig baracuda
now that its all finished, iam trying to set the clock speed because in system/hardware it says `amd athlon xp 2200+, 1.80 Ghz`! went into bios were its set at 1660!, so changed to 2543!ghz, warning memory freq has to be 300 or over, so changed to 400 <400/auto>and system hanged!!! went back and set it to 2052ghz and 333 and is working fine, but @ 2200+, 1.80 Ghz, so how do i up the anti to the top standard setting of 2543 or what ever it is. and what is right clock speed for xp 2600, plus is the asus a7v8x-x set up to jumper free mode to start with because in the bios it say the board has to be set to jumper free mode to change these settings first

IIRC, the 2600 should run @ ~2083Mhz, so it should be set to 166FSB, with a multiplier of 12.5.

your Mobo is a VIA chipset. This means your overclocking options are rather limited, as any increase of your FSB will also overclock your PCI/AGP buses, and this will end up limiting your speed.

Also, your RAM is only PC2700, so that may also prove a limiting factor.

getting any AMD chip over 2.5Ghz requires a great deal of luck, and better-than-air cooling in most cases, so I wouldn't bother trying to get anywhere near that with your mobo.

The best you can do is try to slowly raise the FSB of the CPU, checking for stability as you go.

If you are interested in overclocking, and want to fiddle around, buy a nforce2 mobo (e.g. Abit NF7-S) and a decent cooler for your cpu.

Hi! I have the same board with BIOS v1005 and using a XP1800 i have OC:d from 1553 to ~1860!

Chaincing the multiplier to 13.5 and FSB up to 143 if I remember correctly. So first try to pump up the multiplier step by step until it dosent work anymoore. Go back to the last working step, and then by small increasments rasie the FSB.
Also slightly raising the Vcorevoltage can be helpful.
