Am I able to restore the Windows XP operating system on my laptop from the CD
without trashing my other data/programs? I have used "System Restore" quite
often and now notice several small glitches occurring from time to time so am
wondering if small portions of the system have become corrupt (sorry for the
nontechnical terminology). It would be nice to be able to restore the system
directly from my CD but I haven't been able to discover if this is possible.

Thanks to all who answer.

Kind regards ... Ralph

It depends on the CD you have. If you have a full version of XP then yes you
can run a Repair Install but if you laptop came with "Restore CD" then
chances are that running it might overwrite everything and take the system
back to the same state it was in at time of purchase. You should consult the
manufacturer to see what your options are or, at the very least, let us know
the brand and model of the laptop and what it says on the CD's label.

Assuming a retail version of winxp, you can repair the origonal
installation, but you might want to run the system file checker first. See
win help

> Hi Harry and thanks for your reply. I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and have both the manufacturer's CD as well as a MS Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. There are two CD's to this latter edition. I have opened the first one but can't find enough information to convince me that a restore from the CD won't, as you say, take the system back to the same state that it was when I purchased the computer.

Thank you again for your time.

Regards ... Ralph
