So when I look on the box's display it says 1080i, but when I press the display button it says that it's outputting 480i on the tv itself.

How do I get it to display at 1080i? I know I should get a HD cable box, but it's not my TV/money.

480i looks pretty bad on a 32" 720p TV.

You need an HD cable box and an HDMI or DVI cable to connect it to your TV.

The cable box is connected using RF and it's 480i. The box as I said displays 1080i.

Is there any way to get it to go 1080i instead of 480i?

Your cable box is downconverting your 1080i signal to 480i, RF is an analog signal and it's maximum resolution is 480i. As rev said, you must use component video, HDMI, or DVI to get 720p or 1080i.

Edit: If your TV and cable box both have HDMI, you can pick up an HDMI cable for less than $10.

Okay thanks, I'll try to get a HDMI cable, hopefully 1080i doesn't look too terrible.

Using the HDMI cable, your television set will receive the 1080i signal, and convert it to whatever native resolution it uses. It will look great, don't fret!

I have the same problem and my cable box is connected via HDMI cable to the av receiver and then HDMI cable to the tv. Every time I change the volume the screen goes blank and the cable box switches back from 480p that I have to manually set the cable box at.
