XP versus 98 query

Just a simple question from someone who has migrated from 98se to xp pro.

I was always taught that a bloated windows folder caused a general slowdown
of performance.
iow if the temp folder was heavy or if the desktop had large files on it
then 'windows would run slower'
Or if the registry became 'bloated' as 98 did not clean itself efficiently,
then the o/s would also become slower.

Were these generalisations true ?? and has XP overcome these problems.

Any observations appreciated.

Completely different is an understatement. XP is such a vast improvement
over 95, 98, and Me. I can honestly say that I have not had a system crash
in four years - and I have a lot of apps loaded and running.

I must say after a couple of months using xp pro I am very impressed with

That's because the operating system is designed to try and prevent the
operator from installing software that can hose the system, whereas the
DOS versions can be clobbered at will.
