My Athlon XP 2000 seems to be suffering from an overheating problem. From the first day it was installed, the temperature has been a steady 68 degrees Celsius. I have installed numerous fans, etc., and I even removed the side paneling to my tower case, but nothing changed. Within the past month or so, my CPU temp has risen to a blistering 71-77 degrees! These readings are coming directly from my Bios management screen.

What should I do? Someone said it could be my quarter-height Western Digital HDs (they're quite old; I bought them around the time WD recalled their quarter-heights for having overheating issues). Any suggestions?

hmmmm. Well try this, after the computer has been on for a while power down and quickly crack open the case and touch the base of the heatsink, it should be very warm, if not then you may need to reseat your heatsink, make sure you didn't install it backwards! If the heatsink is very warm, then you have some case ventallation problems.

Just curious, what mobo do you have, asus?

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-7VAX motherboard. :( I'll check the heatsink right now. As an FYI: the heatsink is attached to the CPU cooling fan (its one piece).

Update: the heat sink is EXTREMELY hot to the touch. :(

well thats good, it means that your heatsink has a good contact with your cpu. You need to increase your case's venatlation.

Just curious, how hot does your wd drive get?

What case are you using, how many fans what size and brand? Basically list everything about your system.

I have five different fans total (the case is also open, too). I'm not quite sure how hot my WD is (they're warm to the touch), but my overall system temp is between 39-40 degrees.

I am using a generic Antec mid-tower case which is 2-years-old (give or take).

My system specs are:

Athlon XP 2000
10gig WD
40gig WD
256 DDR
64meg TI Geforce
Pioneer DVD-R
Lite-On CD-R

On-board:
Lan
Sound card

I really appreciate your help, btw. :)

wow, 40c system temp, that's pretty high. Make sure all of your cables are tucked away for good airflow. Try removing that wd drive and see if it cooles down your system.

whats that supposed to mean? Considering the athlon XP and p4 have almost exactly the same thermal output i think you can go bash amd somewhere else.

If it isn't a P6 then it isn't a procesor

My 2100 palimino is 65C under full load and its completely stable. Thats with ambient around 20C though. Might be that there is dust in heat sink though as its getting hotter.

Captain Obvious says you may have one of 3 problems!

1.Heatsink insufficient size for the task of cooling your CPU!
2.Heatsink not on correctly, insufficient thermal interface compound or too thick thermal pad!
3.Bios reads the CPU temp incorrectly!

I'm not bashing, I'm stating a fact. My CPU runs 38C idle and never goes above 50C under full load. That's with stock Intel HSF and 3 case fans. You get what you paid for.

No, Intel's run cooler in general and that's a fact. i'm sorry you guys are having a hard time admitting that.
