Is it possible to use Windows XP's "System Restore" feature outside of the GUI, for example in the recovery console or at the boot prompt? There are times in Windows 2000 when I had to restore my hard drive from a backup because the system would crash right after I got into the GUI so the "Last Known Configuration" reset and was no good for me.

The System Restore feature looks like it could reall help here, but I can't find any information about using it outside of the GUI (if that's at all possible).

Weird. This is what I found:

How to Restore Windows XP to a Previous State

How to Restore the Operating System to a Previous State in Windows XP (Q306084)

If these don't work, the next thing I'd try is to repair Windows XP with the installation CD. Just boot to it, and follow the prompts to repair Windows.

Well, I don't currently have this problem, I'm just planning for if it ever comes to that again like it did in Win2k.

Actually, I just found this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q304449&

Apperantly, System Restore can't be started from the Recovery Console, only from Safe Mode (duh) which has, only every time I've tried to use it, been completely useless to me in Win2k.

Sigh... Not only that, it seems you can't even use the Backup Utility to restore an entire System State from the Recovery Console.

Reading up, it seems the only way to do this is to completely reinstall Windows XP, and then go into the Backup utility and restore. Well, at least there's a way.
