I have a Soltek motherboard http://www.soltek.de/English/product/85miv-l.htm
which has a VIA P4M266 chipset. It currently has a Intel Celeron 1.7 processor in it.

What I want to know is what is the fastest intel processor (P4) that I can put in this motherboard safely and where can I find info on this subject. I've searched the web but it is a minefield as you'd expect.

Help.

In the page you provided, if you look carefully there is the following info printed:

Processor
- Intel Socket 478 Pentium 4 (400MHz FSB)

This means you have to look for a CPU that has a 400MHz FSB. Here is a list from Newegg with all the available CPUs for your mobo. If you live in the USA I don't see a reason why not buying directly from them. Shipping is free and customer service is excellent.

Intel Pentium4 1.8A GHz 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz Processor Bus Retail .. $125
Intel Pentium 4 2.0AGHz 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz Processor Bus Retail .. $156
Intel Pentium 4 / 2.4GHz Northwood 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz Retail Box .. $168

I live in the UK but one final question to you guys. If I was to buy a P4 2.4 Northwood would I need any more modifications for the motherboard I have (above) to take it (Fan, PSU, etc) or is it simply a swapout for the Cel 1.7 Williamette I have in at present.

Links I expect to be the right thing, can anybody confirm
