All of you using the LINKSYS BEFSR41 Routers.

DO NOT FIRMWARE UPDATE TO THE LATEST FIRMWARE VERSION 1.46.2

IF YOU DO UPDATE TO THAT ROUTER FIRMWARE VERSION YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STAY CONNECTED TO ANY "STEAM NETWORKED GAME"

THIS IS NO JOKE GUYS.

If you have updated to the latest firmware version of 1.46.2 you can fix the problem by RE-DOING the firmware update back to firmware version 1.45.7 or 1.45.11

You will not be able to find those older firmware versions at LINKSYS I had to call the tech department and have them Email me firmware versions 1.45.7 and 1.45.11

As yet I have not got the firmware fixed!!

I am posting this to save the rest of you that have the BEFSR41 routers from grief.

I will post back if the reverse firmware update works and the Steam Network allows me to stay connected.

WELL PHIAL that was the "or something else." <--- Bit I mentioned int he other post!!

Yep Risked it and it bit me in the @ss!!

OK SOLUTION!!

If you did a BEFSR41 version 2 Router update to Firmware version 1.46.2 and can no longer game on the STEAM Network.

You can Reverse the firmware update to the original 1.45.7 version.

If anyone needs this .BIN file to upgrade your router back to a usable state simply PM me and I will email you the 1.45.7 file.

Firmware version 1.45.11 dose not function for Steam either.

Regards Hawk.

No Sir!! Only firmware version that works with the BEFSR41 Ver2 router with the Steam Network is the lowest firmware version @ 1.45.7

just open the port on your router or use port fowarding in your router settings with the steam port.

I did do that. I even had LINKSYS open 2 ports for me permanently that I watch at my end.

Router does not work with either of the last 2 Firmware updates and Steam.

Yes you simply lose connection to the server you are in and get booted out to the splash screen fro Steam.

There is no alert and no error. There are error logs generated in the Steam folder to read but they are misleading as the eroor log generated is illagitamate as the connection dropped due to the router firmware version.

Below is a picture of the Game Console crash I managed to retrive after crashing out of servers. The game cannot host the router firmware and starts to read off fails and terminates at the bottom.

thankfully, I dont have a router. I dont even have a firewall ;)

I know its dangerous not to, but I dont have anything on my computer that would cause anyone to try to gain access. I have windows patched up and have an anti-virus so I have never had an issue with viruses coming in through my open connection.

heheh I love calling technical support ;)

Are you Serious ?

Talk to Steam ?

The ones that have Admin control of the Steam forums are children or act exactly like children.

I have not read one single Administrator post that helped anyone in regards to Steam.

They ban anyone off those forums that even suggests hacker activity within the Steam Network or Problems with the Steam Network.

I was reading a post the other day and I go to reply to the poster about some issue and it says you cant post to this guy he was Banned. In fact it says he was banned under his user name.

The forums are full of posters with stolen CD keys and problems networking Steam and they have their posts closed so no one can reply to them or help them out.

As far as I can tell the administrators for the Steam forum let a select few totally ignorant childish individuals run around those forums back stabbing any post or trying to discredit anyone that has a real issue they need resolved.

I figure if I could get a phone line to the Mythical Steam Head Office some freak wearing leather pants no shorts and a Hooters ball cap would answer the phone.

Seriously let Steam wallow in their own grave. Real gamers that have networked online for years have given up on them. Anyone that tries gets closed down faster then an FBI strip search.

I go tot he Forums read a few relevant posts and now only PM a guy so I put nothing on the boards.

Look what a service like that has done to me rant rant rant. Makes the users feel pathetic and that will only lead to Steam closing just like HEAT.NET and Activisions main game servers and support as well as a few other Networking warehouses for gamers.

Steam has no integrity or they would solve the end users problems update VAC "Vicious Accusations Curtailed" So hackers run the Steam network in such great numbers that not a single server in Steam is clean. Not a one NOTA!!

The only thing I have observed Steam do is protect their CD-Keys to such an extent they block half the general public from using their valid retail copies. They protect the investment but not the users.

We need some serious Government regulations in regards to Networks providing a user internet interface for online gaming. It is not up tot he server owners or providers to ensure that the servers they use on the Steam network are problem free that task is solely on the shoulders of the Steam network.

I know server owners they spend 99% of their time trying to keep their servers up and running because of the lack of Steam support. In fact if you were adopted at 2 years of age you would have more luck findings your parents then you would a Steam representative.

I called LINKSYS as I said they were very thankful for the information. A tech even gave me his Yahoo email account so I could further feed him info.

I called my own ISP back because I had an outstanding Ticket number on the call I made before I figured out what was wrong. I told them what happened with my router and why Steam failed.

I received emails from my ISP thanking me and from both the tech at LINKSYS and the support@linksys.com Techs on this deal with the router firmware update not working with the Steam Network.

I also sent them the link to the DSLREPORTS.COM forum where the other gamers figured out what in hell was wrong.

I never made any attempt to contact Steam they don't care. In fact they don't care so much the Search option on the forums for Steam does not even address this issue or the error messages reported in the game console. HOW OUT OF TOUCH can they be ?

Dear David,

Thank you for contacting Linksys Customer Support.

We appreciate your taking the time to give us valuable feedback. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience this has caused you.

We do not have any issue concerning the use of firmware 1.46.2 on BEFSR41. If the said firmware version does not work on Steam application, please utilize the firmware 1.45.11 for the mean time. You must be able to downgrade the firmware of your BEFSR41.

To downgrade the firmware of your BEFSR41, please follow these steps:

Note: Make sure you have the firmware 1.45.11 handy. If you do not have the file, please download the firmware on our ftp site <ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/>. You will need to download the befsr41v2.1-v1.45.11_code.bin and befsr41v2_14511_Tftp.exe.

1. Once you download the firmware Zip file, unzip it. If you do not have an unzipping program, go to http://www.winzip.com and download WinZip, which will allow you to unzip the file.

2. After unzipping the firmware files, one of them will be called TFTP.EXE. Double click on it.

3. When the “Upgrade Firmware” window opens, you will have three prompts. The “Server” field is for the IP address of your router; by default this would be 192.168.1.1.

4. Enter the routers password into the “Password” field; by default the password is admin.

5. Browse for the file in the Firmware Upgrade utility program by clicking on the button next to file with the '…' symbol on it. Look for the file named 'code.bin' in the folder where the firmware files were extracted to or point it to befsr41v2.1-v1.45.11_code.bin .

6. Highlight the code.bin file and click on the Open button to direct the TFTP loader program to put that file into the "File" box.

7. Click on the Upgrade button to begin the upgrade process.

8. The upgrade should take about 1 minute, and you will be prompted after the upgrade is complete and successful.

9. If firmware upgrade fails, please try resetting the router by holding the reset button for 30 seconds. Then, repeat the steps from Step 2.

If Tftp.exe application fails to downgrade your router's firmware, I suggest use the web-based utility of the BEFSR41 to downgrade the firmware.

To use the web-based utility of your BEFSR41 for downgrading the firmware, please follow these steps:

Accessing the Router's Setup Page

1. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape.

2. When the browser window opens, go to the Address bar and type in the router's IP Address and click on the Go button (192.168.1.1 is the default IP address of Linksys Routers).

3. A window will appear prompting for a “User Name” and a “Password”. Leave the “User Name” field blank, and type in the router's password and click on the OK button to login (admin is the default password). The router's web-based “Setup” utility should then load.

4. Once the Setup page loads, go to Administration tab, and click on Firmware Upgrade sub-tab.

5. Once the Firmware Upgrade page loads, click on browse and point it to befsr41v2.1-v1.45.11_code.bin. Then, hit Upgrade button.

Furthermore, I will be forwarding this matter to the proper department for review. Please keep posted on our website for the firmware update that would possibly fix the issue.

If you have further questions, please contact us at (800) 326-7114 so that we may further assist you. Please use this phone number given as reference for future support calls.

Sincerely,

I had to email them back and tell them yet again that the only version of firmware that funtions with Steam is the 1.45.7 firmware.

Thank you very much for your technical help. I have the router again working with the Steam network however the only firmware version that works on the BEFSR41 4 port router and the Steam network is the 1.45.7 version. All versions above this version will only get you disconnected from all Steam game servers 10 seconds after joining.

All other aspects of the 1.45.11 firmware caused me no other issues with internet use.

Until I brought this to their attention none of their data bases dated before yesterday had any clue of this situation. That in it's self explains all of it.

It's not fixed all Linksys could offer was to explain to me to roll my drivers back to the 1.45.11 firmware.

This is after I told them the only solution was to roll the drivers back to the 1.45.7 issue!!

Funny how they turned that around on me (Big Canadian EH!!) there good old Texas LINKSYS support buddy's "ten Four and all that"

I sent them back 2 emails explaining the only fix was the lowest version of their firmware for the BEFSR41 modem.

Sorry guys it was like trying to pull teeth with a pair of plastic pliers. They did not want to accept the problem and after they realized what I had explained many times they sent back my own solution...........

The point is they got notified and they would need to have a few Engineers hash with Steam. Case closed.

I want to buy a new router but now I hesitate as I would still like a LINKSYS router but I do not know if the new firmware on their newest broadband routers have an issue with Steam ? My current router is a 2002 or older model.

Anyone else here have a new LINKSYS that works ok on Steam ?

You can read the .BIN files I was thinking of comparing the code between the new update and the oldest update to see where the BUG is.

I got some time soon so I can get realy involed in it. I like puzzles.
