Forum CPU & Components : CPUs A Noob with a question who would really appreciate

Word :    Username :

I just purchased some new components today here's what they are:
ASRock x533 mobo
Pentium Celly 2.4ghz
Chaintech GeForce 5200fx
512mb ddr pc2700
Maxtor 60gig ata133

And my problem is that I am not getting even close to what I expected to get out of this system as far as gaming goes. Graphics are kinda jerky and I dont get very many FPS on certain games. I am very dissapointed with my purchase. But I still have about 24 hours to trade this system for the following:
AMD 2400+ athlon
ASUS A7S333 mobo
ATI Radeon 9200

Would I gain very much by trading for this system? If so would it be enough to want to trade? Would I be better off just getting a better vid card? any comments, suggestions, and help would be greatly appreciated.

If you still can, get the GPU replaced. I've read somewhere that the 5200FX doesn't perform as good as a GF4 Ti4200 or if you can afford it get the Radeon 9500Pro.

Yea get at least a Ti4200 , anything less is not up to scratch with the latest games. CPU power is not essential to gaming, anything over about 1.6 ghz is fine. My motto for gaming machines is to spend twice as much on your graphics card as your cpu. Also do swap to an AMD XP as celerons are crappy chips.

Forget the celeron, get a real P4 or get the athlon. The xp2400 and Radeon setup should almost double your framerates.

Your Celeron won't inhibit your games at all. I know people running 1.2 Tbirds that get just as good framerates as people running 2.4G pentiums. Your graphics card is the culprit. Get a Ti 4200 or 4600 or 4800...all of them are relatively inexpensive. Or just punch out a 9600 or 9500 Pro. You'll be set after that.

I think you should swap.

Maybe after you swap get a better graphics card too.

ouch ouch OUCH ouch ouch!

There are three main problems with your system that make me wince.

A. It uses a celleron processor
B. It only uses PC2700 in a single channel configuration
C. Its got a FX5200.

The P4 celleron has got high Mhz, and is good for simple cpu dependent tasks... but kinda sucks for things that require lots of memory throughput. Like games! (due to the lack of L2 cache compared to a normal P4)

This is further exacerbated by the ram. P4's perform best with dual channel memory solutions.

And finally you have a FX5200. A very budget card. Yes it is DirectX9 capable, but is dog slow (especially doing DX9) and slower than a previous generation Geforce4 Ti4200.

Yes your trade in will be better with regards to CPU and memory performance, but you still need a better card than a R9200 in my opinion.
No chance to option it up to a R9600?

they should have named the fx5200 what it really is: a rebadged geforce 4mx
