Ok, forgive me if this question seems really dumb. I currently have a 4200+ installed on my cpu. my current specs to the best of my limited knowledge are:
Athlon XP 2400+ (266mhz fsb)
1024mb ddr pc2100
Asus a7n8x deluxe motherboard
Ati Radeon 9800pro (128mb)
80gb hd
I play alot of pc games and I was looking to upgrade my chip. Would it be worth it as far as performance increase (not price) to upgrade to an athlon 3200+ from my current 2400+? I'm thinking if I get a better cpu I can also upgrade my ram since 2100 is the fastest speed my ram will run.
Fnally if I do get a 3200, what is the appropriate ram speed for it? Thank you in advance if anyone can help
wow, how did you get that?
btw, from 2400+ to 3200+, yes, the performance would increase by a lot..but it costs too much now..better idea is to get Barton2500+ and OC it for now
I was thinking the exact same thing during the last few days And I think I agree with the post above. We are talking about 33% increase as far as the PR goes, so I would expect to see the same increase in performance (ok, maybe a bit less but it's still quite a lot).
I agree. A good video card is much more important than a CPU for games. but if you feel you need to upgrade, go for the 2500+ barton.

1 GIG of ram ? on such a lowly cpu ? Oh man, better edit that post before eden sees it
To answer your question: I'm not sure if I would upgrade anything in your place. Seems like your setup shouldn't have a hard time running just about any game at high res, smoothly. Problem is, to upgrade you would need faster ram and a faster cpu. Thats gonna be costly and not gain you a whole lot, and you'd be stuck with a dead end platform. A better idea might be to stick to it for a while, and/or overclock your 2400+ if it has some headroom, and upgrade straight to a A64 by the end of the year. It will cost a little more, but the money would be much better spent than on a 3200+ barton now and new memory now.
