In my system currently I have a 2400+ athlon xp, I was thinking of upgrading, but seeing how it is the end of the year I dont wanna upgrade too much until next year. My upgrade choice is the 2500+ Barton. My 2400+ has a speed of 2.0 ghz, is the 2500+ at 1.8 ghz gonna give me anything more? This seems strange to me that it runs slower than my 2400 but is considered an upgrade. I did notice that the 2500 has a fsb of 333 compared to my 266 on my 2400. Will the fsb on the 2500 make that much of a difference? I use my pc for gaming so I wanna try and squeeze everything out of it I can for as little $ as I can. Would this purchase be a wise one or not?
Thanx ya'll

It'll be faster, the higher bus speed and larger cache ensure that... but not much. The xx00+ ratings give relative performance, so the 2500+ is on average 4% faster than the 2400+. If you're concerned about budget, are you sure you want to spend nearly $100 on a 4% CPU speed increase?

Don't upgrade. In many cases, where extra cache and FSB doesn't matter, 2400+ will perform better because of it's higher clockspeed

yeah the XP2400+ to barton XP2500+ isnt worth it.
You will see little if no performance increase.
Infact in some instances you may go backwards as teh XP2500+ runs at 1833Mhz while the XP2400+ runs at 2000Mhz.

The 166fsb will make a difference with memory hungry applications, but you also need PC2700 ram as well.

I wouldnt spend the money to go to barton 2500, small increase in performance and possibly none at all, maybe even slower performance depending on the app running at the time. wait until next year and go for a much larger increase:)

I upgraded from a 2400 to a 2500 about 4 months ago. I really needed the new chip for my daughter's rig. No difference until I decided to see how fast it would run with stock fan and voltages. I stopped at 2.25 gigs. I now change speed around depending on function, but never go below 2.1 . Yes, it was worth the $125 canadian. It is especially good if you can sell or have another rig for the 2400. I must say though that the new stock cpu fans have given me a problem. It is so quiet I have to check that it is running.
Not too many people have that problem these days.
