Based on the BIG risks of screw up built in SP-1 listed all over the net, I was going to "wait and see". The Screen Savers demonstration about the security hole convinced me to go ahead and risk the DANGERS is SP1.

I began about 24 hours ago on a cable modem. The Windowss Update tooked you to a "Express install" of SP1. You must be connected to the web to use it. It hiccuped seriously after inspecting my syatem saying the internet connection was not functioning. After several retriies, I disconnected the router and made a direct connection. Same result. I then followed instructions and looked for instructions what to do in this case back on the Microsoft SP-1 support page. No such instructiions exist as of a few hours ago.
I found the Network instalation version and tried to download that at about 4:00 AM. Tuesday the 18th. Remember this is a cable modem conection directly connected to the web perfect working order with download speeds of up to 1500 and upload speeds about 300. The best possible speed that I could get from the SP-1 site was about 20-22. This with EVERYTHING disabled ... _nothing_ else running in the computer on a fresh FULL XP HOME OEM install 1.8 GIG with over 10 gig of space available on the C drive. Afer a while the conection just timed out. That happeded repeatedly.
It's now about 24 hours later and the timeouts persist. I finally got the goods with 2 time outs and IE doing something similar to Netscape's Smartupdate.
After installing SP-1 and verifiying a valid file, the first thing that I notice is that the 30 day count down was restarted. and that computer cannot get on the web. So it's safe for now form that hack or any other for now.
As reported by others, a few icons were "cleaned" from the screen desktop without SP- verifying that was approproate. It was not. I had two versions of some software on purpose. Each Icon was sightly diffeent in title and pointer.

I'm just waiting to see what other surpirses MS err Messed up Software in Bellevue Washington has loaded in that keg of dynomite called XP SP-1.

What's your experience? Good or Bad or still waiting?

I installed XP SP1 on two systems. Both work perfectly with improved stability, and performance. I even merged the WinXP CD with SP1 so the next time I have to reformat, SP1 will automatically be applied. Also, my network performance tripled. For some reason, I was only getting 25% network utilization while transfering files before SP1. Now, I get 75%-85% network utilization. I love WinXP SP1 and I highly recommend for everyone to install it.

1. Download the cd-key changer and service pack
2. Change cd-key
3. Install sp1

No problems...

Open up task manager and click on Networking. Try to copy a single multigigabyte file from one computer to another and look at the network utilization! I was surprised to see it copy a 1.2GB file in just under 3 min!

I installed it 2 weeks ago, but it took A LOT of time to download.
I don't notice any difference from the other, but I must tell you: DON'T do a system restore to a point before installing it, because when you press undo my last restoration it won't find the appropriate files. I was lucky because I had done a restore point before restoring it to a day before, because I needed some files I had deleted.

My DVD reader is destroyed! I told you it wasn't an oven!

The best thing you can do, *EVAR*!

Always, always, always,always,always,always,always,always,always,always,always...

Download the admin packs. Download the SP1 network admin pack, and burn it off to cdr.

Then, integrate it directly into the install disk, and burn off the XP/SP1 to a cdrom.

(warning to warez puppies: you'll have to wait for the new keygenerator, or purchase a "official" copy of XP Pro before integrating SP1 into Corp.)
