I was wondering if anyone knew whether AMD or Intel might be releasing a true 64-bit processor for the laptop. I realize that the FX-51 is available for desktop, but I would prefer that my next computer be a laptop. Whatever I purchase next, I will be buying it before the end of 2003. However, I do not wish to spend a bundle of money on a mobile Intel 3.2Ghz 32-bit processor if one company or another will be releasing a mobile 64-bit processor in the relative future. Any suggestions or comments?

Any of those high-end laptops will be extremly power-hungry.

I don't know why you would look into 64-bit on laptops. It's much less needed IMO. You could be playing games but I don't expect something intensive, nor will you work on 3d Rendering or anything requiring a real good screen.

My advice is stick to Centrinos. New speeds are coming out, constant drops in the price ensure you can get an excellent power-saving laptop. Average Centrino laptop time is 5 hours.
If they prove too expensive, wait a bit to see reviews on the mobile A64s.

I think I saw a A64-m review somewhere... But I don't think it's widely available yet.

And I agree with Eden here: sticking to Centrinos is probably the best choice right now. It's just a pity that dothan won't be released on time... BTW, will there still be Centrino price cuts within the next weeks or so? Just out of curiosity... My mother wanted one of those! But they're still a bit on the expensive side... At least here.

Hey, I wonder if anyone can pressure Transmeta into writing AMD64 extensions to the microcode for their Crusoe and/or Efficeon chips.
