Hello all,
I've read a few articles/reviews on the performance of the 1.2 ghz celeron vs. other processors like the 1.0 ghz P3. At about half the price of those other processors, I'm swaying more towards the 1.2 celeron.

my question is what chipsets out there are compatible with the 1.2 celeron (fcpga2, 100mhz fsb)? the motherboard i have is i815 based. is there a specific version/release/markings of i815 which supports FCPGA2?

thanks in advance!

I think that it's a socket requiement, not a chipset requirement. Either the mobo supports it or it doesn't. Likely yours doesn't.

However there are adapters out there that will let you run the new chips on old mobos. I haven't heard much good about them yet, but maybe that's just because people are more vocal when things go wrong? :\

I know that <A HREF="http://www.powerleap.com" target="_new">PowerLeap</A> made an adapter. There were others too. I'm not sure who's was the best.

I also seem to remember though that Intel released 1.13GHz 'Coppermines' that were actually Tualatins already adapted because the whole the 1.13GHz Coppermine fiasco needed some kind of a permanent resolution. How easy those would be to find are another story though. :\

Upgradeware makes better, cheaper adapters than Powerleap. You should go to their site.

You may or may not need an adapter depending on your board. The best Celeron is the 1100 Tualatin because it easily overclocks to 1466MHz at 133MHz FSB. That overcomes the Celeron's biggest handicap, bus speed.

By the way, FCPGA and FCPGA2 are NOT proper ways to identify tualatins. FC-PGA2 only means the processor has a heat spreader, the last Coppermines Intel produced were also FC-PGA2, I owned one so I know this for certain. In fact I still have the box if anyone needs proof.

CrashMan>> thanks for your input!

I did find UpgradeWare's converter for $30 at:
http://www.strattoncomputer.com/370gusoc370a.html

I searched a bit more and found a cheaper one for about $16 with shipping at:
http://66.216.68.88/details.htm?productid=3A-1202

Right now I'm leaning more towards the UpgradeWare since some1 actually recommended the product and that shop is just a quick drive on the D.C. beltway.

BTW, thanks a lot CrashMan for that OC-ing input on the 1.13 Celeron.. though I'm probably going to go with the 1.2 because stability is quite significant for this machine's particular purpose (extreme heat, cold, and bumps).

Sorry I forgot to ask this in my reply but what would happen if I threw in an FCPGA2 processor into a normal FCPGA socket? Would it throw up all over me? Or did some engineer actually spend the extra few hours to put it safe guards against the incompatibility?

The motherboard I have by the way is Tualatin ready for the P3 processors, does this mean Tualatin ready for Celerons? My assumption is that it is.

If your mobo supports Tualatins, then yeah, it'll run the Celeron versions just as easily as it will the P3 versions. They're pretty much the same CPU anyway. And if it supports Tualatins then you don't need a converter either.

I put an FC-PGA2 Coppermine in a non-tualatin board and it worked fine. But if you put a Tualatin in a non-tualatin board, it detects the difference and refuses to power up.
