I am new to this forum and am 'reviving' a previous thread that was closed. Forgive me if I error on protocol.

On this formum was an original post that sums up my exact issue. I am pasting it here:

>"Hi, I have a Compaq Laptop O/S Vista Home Basic running Office Professional 2003, a couple of weeks ago I started getting "The printer has not yet responded, but the MS office program may be able to proceed without printer information. Do you want to continue to wait for the printer?" error message, I have tried removing normal.dot, removing office and re-installing and removing printer and re-installing, printer is an Epson SX115 and is attached via usb port to my laptop. Also tried printing to my father in laws Epson SX210 via USB and still get the same error. Only get error in word all other apps print perfectly. Can anyone help, I have been trawling the internet forums for the last two weeks and tried everything they have come up with."

I found many posts on the net asking about this problem. My exact Google search was "Word 2003 won't print epson". The only "solution" of any sort was one poster on another forum claiming that the issue was caused by a corrupt font and that by deleting and re-installing a set of Windows XP fonts (copied from another XP machine) in the windows/fonts folder solved the problem. I am dubious of this solution, but have found no other credible advice as of yet.

I have built and maintained many systems over the past 20 years... so I am familiar with taking a systematic approach to problem solving. But just to be clear: The issue is ONLY printing out of Office 2003. All other apps, including Office apps, print properly. I AM ABLE to print a PDF out of Word 2003. I HAVE deleted and re-installed the Epson drivers. I have plugged the Epson into an alternate USB port. Yes, the Epson is set as the default printer.

The exact error message out of Word is:
"The printer has not yet responded, but the MS office program may be able to proceed without printer information. Do you want to continue to wait for the printer?"
At times I've opted to wait, and after several minutes was able to print. At other times, the Epson printer was missing from the print-dialogue box and had to be re-selected. This too would take several minutes to resolve, if it did at all. At other times the printer-dialogue box reports that the Epson is there, idle, ready to go... but upon printing another error comes up from Windows (that I have yet to write down). So the issue is both annoying AND inconsistent!!! :pt1cable:

I am reluctant to chase after the one suggestion about replacing fonts as I am working on it remotely -it's my sister's, 1,000 miles from here, and she does not have the disks needed to recover Windows or Office on this hand-me-down machine. If I manage to crash Windows by mismanaging the replacement of system fonts I'll be hard-pressed to help her beyond that point.

She is willing to purchase whatever software or hardware may be necessary to solve the issue, but I'm not at a point where I can recommend with certainty where the problem lies. The only thing that is obvious by deduction is that is has something to do with the communication between Word 2003 and Epson Workforce 30 Series inkjet printer.

Thank you in advance for an suggestions.

Think if I were you I would try replacing the Windows Font folder, just in case it does the trick! I dug up an old Acer Laptop which runs XP, the Font folder is only 18.1 Mb (compared with 370Mb in Win7!) so could be emailed. If you don't have an XP machine I could send you the file or email it to your sister...

Dodger46:

Thank you for your kind offer to forward XP font files. I have an XP machine here that I can use for that purpose.

I am not clear as to whether the font's are registered in the system registry, or are simply read from windows/fonts system folder with each boot. In other words, I am not sure if the procedure for replacing the existing fonts is to simply delete the existing, paste in the new and reboot... or if the existing fonts need to be uninstalled and the new fonts installed. Do you happen to know? If not I can certainly experiment here to figure it out.

Thanks in advance!
