Do LGA 2011-based processors really need to be matched up to closed-loop liquid coolers? Not at all. We collected 14 different high-end heat sink kits able to do the job with air. Keep an eye out for our upcoming performance write-up, too!

wow, you could have spent less and got a Hyper 212 Evo, which cools just as well, if not better.

Right, with this many coolers there would have been too many photos for a normal-length review. So the pictures were split across two articles, the second one has performance data.

Bought it a month back and doesnt disappoint me a bit when it comes to cooling my 955 BE....

I assume those will be tested and benchmarked - right?!

If so then add water cooling kits: Corsair H100, Intel BXRTS2011LC, Swiftech EDGE, Ek H30 360 HFX, etc; see -> http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l2/g30/c321/list/p1/Liquid...

Most folks with LGA 2011 are doing some form of water cooling.

Nice pics crashman ... and the slideshow seems to be working a bit better lately.

The devs must have been busy.

Looking forward to the second article with the benchies mate.

If you can comment on the ease of retention mechanism / fittings for these that would also be great.

I recall the mongrel retention system on those early thermaltake coolers ... mine went to the tip via a "hammer session" after the umpeenth time taking it off and struggling to put the damned thing back on.

Sometimes breaking something can be sooo cathartic.

I'm actually hoping the nh-d14 doesn't win... again. It be nice if the best cpu cooler wasn't colored fugly for once.
the deepcool looks promising and i've heard good things about phanteks (though they're a bit flamboyant imo).

Probably will get down-rated :??:  , but I personally like the look of the CNPS12X. It would look great in my current set-up, but might conflict with the RAM.

Probably the Coolink Corator DS. It's a little hard to find but performs well and doesn't have a fan hanging off the front or back.

As for best with "minimal" RAM clearance issues...there's a review coming up!

Where are the chips that use these coolers? You can't exactly go out and buy a 3930k. They've been sold out everywhere for over a month now. Where is the 3820? Sites were running reviews of it yet it never managed to materialize. Some of these coolers look like good options, but the scarcity of Sandy Bridge E chips is disturbing.

While there may be any number of reasons to replace the barely adequate stock cooler (noise being high on the list, especially for AMD), I don't think it should be necessary to have a huge, expensive monster like these in a typical gamer build. With TDPs holding the line or coming down, hopefully something relatively small and extremely quiet can beat the stock coolers without requiring a gonad as a down payment.

You'll like the review, especially since there IS NO stock cooler for most LGA 2011 processors.

As evidenced by the wide range of products, it won't be a value review. But while the "best value" product might not be the "best" product, it will certainly be mentioned with some admiration.

And no TT Frio? I was sure they'd make one for LGA2011.

Might not be the best P/P, but it certainly is good. Got it on my PhII and let's me ride at 4.1Ghz.

Cheers!

If I needed a 6-core monster for work, I'd first have that $500-$1000 processor price. Spending up to a $100, or just 10% of the cost of the CPU (or as low as 1-2% of the total build cost) on an air cooler would be no sweat b/c I'd know this machine was going to make me money and perform better than the previous one in dollars/per minute of workload.

It's a great line-up encompassing the full range of whats available to most folks shopping in the $30-$100 range. I don't see how anyone could knock that. I'm rooting for the incumbent but I'm sure most people are looking for a new crowning.

The Thermalright True Copper is still the best. :)  Anyone lucky enough to get one before they sold out has an heirloom on their hands. I have the updated "pressure vault bracket system" and it works GREAT on my socket 1155 board!
