Probobly 4-5 months ago games on my comp started to use my entire cpu (p2 400mhz), first it was just Starcraft doing it for a while then the problem spread to other things randomly over time like Unreal Tournament and Homeworld:Cataclysm.

I've searched quite a few sites and havn't found any answer to this problem, I have no idea whats causing it.

"Use your entire CPU"? You mean it's at 100% usage? And what exactly is this "spreading" problem?

First things first, detech & remove spyware, adware & other junk in your system if you haven't already done so. Download & install these two programs:

What I mean by it using my entire CPU is that its using whatever is free and causing the program to lag badly and whatever else is running.

I said spreading because it was orignally just Starcraft having this problem for a while, then all of a sudden it started happening to other games etc one after the another.

I've already run Ad-Aware a few times before and just ran SpyBot S&D also ran AVG and HouseCall for viruses.

Sounds like you got a bug. For info sake besides the PII 400, how much RAM do you have and what GPU are you using?
What do you have for a PSU? and last but not least, did you load Starcraft first or the other games first and do you defrag frequently?

Umm... Games are supposed to use up all the CPU. The explenation is that games try to run at the highest FPS possible. If you want for things in the background to stop lagging you can lower the priority of the process which is running the game, the process will still use any available processing power but anything else will get a higher priority over it.

I have 192mb of PC100 SDRAM and a TNT2 M64 PCI, i don't know what a PSU is and Starcraft gets loaded first, i was told to try defragging before but that didn't do much at all.

It never used the entire CPU before on any of the other comps i've had, for example in Unreal Tournament it ran fine for a few weeks, then all of a sudden it uses the entire cpu and causes really bad lag. I even tried setting its priority lower than the other things running and it had no effect.

EDIT: PSU is a Karpo 250W KPT-250ATX A1

PSU stands for Power Supply Unit. How are you monitoring CPU usage? Which OS are you using currently?

If you're using Win98 try this; click on START>>SHUTDOWN>>RESTART in MS-DOS MODE... once you're in the DOS screen you'll see "C:\WINDOWS\>blinking cursor". Type"cd.." without the quotes and you should see C:\

Now at the PROMPT or cursor type "scanreg/fix" without the quotes and as soon as it finishes, at the PROMPT again type "scanreg/opt" without the quotes and as soon as it finishes you'll see C:\

This time you type "exit" without the quotes and windows will boot.

If your REGISTRY was damaged, that should fix it. Do a DEFRAG and then see if that made a difference. If it didn't, only thing I can think of is your PSU not handling the load. Then again it could be a lot of other things.

Let me know if that helped.

Shutdown the manager and run the game. see if you get better results. With win2k I don't have much experience with.
