May this be the epilogue of the book and end this already.

I find it ironic Intel is talking like BB did here with the "throughout the processor life" claim (no attack intended BB!). So 100W should be the max for Prescott.

Expect better core steppings later on. Hmm, it's interesting though, and will make us wonder what Intel has in store.

the thing that intrigues me is that AMD is always cocky right now about there .90 process.... they are saying the NEW AMD is testing .09 hammer samples right now.

Where did you pick up that "NEW AMD" quote?
And why use such quote?

If Prescott's thermals are back on track, the December 3rd date may not be so farfetched. Though I ain't betting on anything. They could be modifying it for all we know.

You can interprete this in several different ways; first of all, are the talking about typical power consumption or TDP ? Definately not Pmax though, and TDP can be set arbitrarely high or low; Pmax is always higher than TDP (rule of thumb is TDP=75% of Pmax), question is, how much higher in this case ? In other words, how quickly will Prescott start throtteling to remain within the TDP enveloppe ?

Secondly, did they indeed fix Prescotts power consumption (leakage) which will allow them to scale as high as originally intended, or are they simply facing the fact >100W can not be cooled or powered economically, and therefore backing down on clockspeeds and limiting themselves to, say, ~3.8 GHz ?

I'm not guessing either way, time will tell, but this statement doesnt really tell us much as long as they don't give us a statement like "we redesigned the core which reduced Pmax from 140 to 120W at 3.6 GHz".

Lastly, 100W is still an awfull lot for a 103 mm² core, and gives you power draw (Ampere) roughly 20% higher than a P4C and a thermal density that is a whopping 60% higher than a P4C 3.2. That is just not so great whichever way you look at it..

Gee Amd is testing 90Nm. Intel is testing 65Nm. Plus Intel 90NM will be out in 6 months or less.
And your point is that ..? 90Nm or not, that alone can't guarantee to Intel that they will have the fastest processors around. Plus I don't see why you reacted like this to a valid fact that he mentioned, which is that indeed AMD is testing 90Nm Hammers right now. Everyone knows that AMD can not be compared to Intel (eg: 1 fab Vs 13?? or something). But the fact that they are around and they are still making competitive products is only good for us.

Prescott or Athlon64, I think we are reaching the end of todays technology.
After 90nm, how far we can go?
Can you imagine a 130w processor, running under a 1kg heatsink?
We should start to look at some where else.

so don't attack him on this!
I had recalled a vague memory reading NEW AMD somewhere, so I asked him. Where did I attack him?

If Intel confirms that for the entire Prescott core life it's going to be no more above 100W, then where exactly is the issue here?

I'm just a bit confused with your skepticism and their pretty bold claim of "90-100W MAX for the entire Prescott life".

What is so bad about having even 150 watt consumation 3.2 is allready at 100 and EE edition is at 130 watt something.Itanium 2 1Ghz was using 120 watt and all of those cpu are working fine and can be overclock.
The little hick if the 1 rumor were to be true prescott is on the rule of 90% of TDP not 75% like others MPU on the market or better like itanium cannot get in any case more that 70% of there Max consumation.

I dont like french test

Yes... it's called Itanium
But that has a much larger core, at any rate the way current processor tech is going in the future we will have copper heatsinks with silver inserts contacting the core.

If it isn't a P6 then it isn't a procesor

Intel already has planned new HSF designs.
