Some of you may remember I was having a problem with the Extra Ball target
(#56) that was also registering #66 (opto/left main ramp), #76 (RT trough)
and sometimes #62 (opto/whirlpool exit) during the switch edge test. You
may also remember that I moved a wire on the switch for #46 and the problem
vanished.

Well, today I replaced my L-3 prom with the new L-5 (game was unplugged)
.....the game booted fine and I played a few games and noticed the Extra Ball
wasn't working again. So I started tracing wires and found nothing. I
traced the WHT-BLU wire to the backbox and started looking at the CPU board.
One of the smaller IC chips didn't look as if it was seated all the way so I
fully seated it. There was also corrosion on most of the R51 - R78 row of
capacitors so I used some electrical parts cleaner with a soft brush and
cleaned most of it - I didn't want to go too hard.

Now, when I turn the game on I'm getting the following errors:
GR SHORT Row2
WHT-RED R2

GR SHORT ROW 6
WHT-BLU R6

BIG FOOT ERROR R6
WHT-BLU

Checked the CPU board and R2 and R6 look fine. Whoever had the game before
me did a very poor job resoldering the caps on the CPU board. R31 - R34 look
replaced and R33 looks like it's reversed. Is it supposed to be? Also,
there's a jumper wire on U18 #2 to R29 .. what's that for?

Are the CPU boards interchangable at all? I'm really not comfortable
resoldering those caps and I feel that whoever did the previous work might
have shorted something out?

Thanks for any help.

Start by disconnecting the connectors at the bottom of the WPC board,
and then fire it up. If the ground short messages disappear, the
problem is in the wiring. If not, the problem is on the board.

Yes, Whitewater CPU boards are interchangeable with many games of the same
vintage.

Before you sent this reply last night I was able to get rid of the
error messages from coming up when the game is powered on. It looked
fine so I went to the SW edge tests and pressed the extra ball target,
and almost everything started going off after that. I didn't really
get a good look at what was coming up but jets were moving, bumpers
were moving, etc. I didn't want to leave it on in that condition and
risk further damage so I unplugged it.

At this point, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the connectors
J205 ~ J212, and that it's the board itself and those caps need to be
re-evaluated and re-soldered. I like to think that I'm average-or-so
with electronics just scared to do it to my first machine. If I need
to replace the CPU board, will I be able to get something that will
work without any issues or should I stick with the one I got and try to
get it working?

No. Swap it with what? What does that do?

For those interested, I replaced the CPU board and everything is fine so
far. The volume doesn't seem to be as sharp. I'm going to go through and
check all the switches but everything should be working perfectly now.
Thanks for your assistance everyone that helped.
