Battery issue

Hello,
pls tell me what to do to make its battery endurance back to normal, i got this notebook from my brother in north carolina. after a week of using it i have noticed that its battery lasts only for 4-5 hrs wherein the first week it even worked for 10 hrs... i charged it for 9 hrs but to my surprise the battery has only for 5 hrs. pls tell me what to do, i know nothing about notebooks since i was using a desktop before =(
