Wifi problem

in my hp laptop,the wifi connection is not picking up.my id is not getting listed.but all the nearby ids are listed.further the hp touchpad is able to get connected to the modem through wifi and i am able to connect the laptop to the modem through the cable.i would like to know
1.is it due to a software problem?
2.can it be due to the driver?if so why there is no problem with the direct connection?
3.how do i rectify the problem?

1. could be, update the wifi driver on the laptop. If your touchpad can see the wifi signal, so should your laptop be able to. Make sure your wireless setup is set to broadcast the name, if it's not, you can add the connection manually in the laptop.

2. WiFi and ethernet network cards are different hardware with different drivers.
