Maverick translite lighting problem/DMD issue

Hello--

Looks like I've got a couple of issues here. The first one, probably a
minor thing, is that only half my backbox lights light up. Like if you
divided it in half with a diagonal line, the upper right is all lit up
and the bottom left is dead. I thought it might be a fuse but they all
look good (although maybe I'm missing one, since I'm pretty much a
newcomer to pinball work).

2nd problem is that I've got 2 lines out on the dmd. And it's the
dreaded ribbon cable model (I've heard this is bad). Is there anything
that can be done?

Thanks

Thanks a bunch. I'll go through the fuses, but that burnt connector
might be the more likely source (unfortunately). The dmd fix sounds
like something I'd make a mess of, lol. Better have a backup display
if I'm going to attempt that. :)

On a Mav I shopped out I found a broken solder joint in the wiring for
the GI *UNDER* the paper diagram stapled to the back of the lamp board.
It had exactly the same lights out that you have. For the DMD 5 volt
upgrade just follow the service bulletin instructions to make the cable.
It's easy and totally cures the problem.

The 5 volt upgrade will fix just two lines being out on the display?
The lines are vertical, in the middle of the right side of the display.
Just need some clarification on that. I'll go check under the paper
for broken wires. Thanks!

Check fuses by removing from game and checking with an ohm meter. Then check
the GI connectors to the board they get power from for burned connectors.

DMD, check along the edge where the lines are out. You most likely have a
cracked or broken trace to the glass part. If you are good, it can be fixed
with an electrical conductive epoxy or soldered. LTG :)

Be sure the bulbs are good too. LTG :)

Sorry! I didn't fully read the dmd problem. I ASSumed it was the typical
resetting issue with the big displays.
Now, for missing lines its usually just (just?) a broken solder joint at
that row or column. You can use a conductive epoxy to repair the
connection. I've used a $9 defroster repair kit from Kragens Auto Parts
with fantastic results. Google for mine and others fixes for this. Good
luck!

I guess my main question is, how fragile is the display? Like if I
take it apart and fix those two lines, are 10 other lines going to
crack at the same time? The display scares me a little bit because of
the replacement cost (although I did email that one guy around here
that's selling those replacements--if he's got one I might give it a
shot). Thanks guys.

I think I found the gi problem--burnt connector on the power supply
board, two wires on the connector are pretty black. CN8 I believe was
the connector. Question is, where can I get a replacement connector
set at? I'm assuming that I'm going to need to replace the connector
and not salvage it. Thanks! All of your help has been fantastic--I'm
sure that's what the problem is.

They aren't all that fragile. Keep in mind they were made to be ina
arcade environment so they are pretty tough. The only thing to be
careful of is shorting across other rows or columns with the conductive
paint or epoxy. I used a toothpick to paint the material under the
broken lines and then once I verified conductivity with my meter I super
glued the paint to give it strength.

I would also check for cracked header pins on the back side of both the
solenoid driver and the power supply.

Replaced the connector, fixed my GI problem...for 2 days. Now the
opposite side is out. I'm thinking though that this isn't related to
the connector--I'm thinking it might be the GI relay. The lights
usually work for a little bit, but once the machine has been on for a
bit I hear a click and the lights on the one side go out (anywhere from
10 seconds to 2 minutes). After the machine has warmed up, the lights
on that side never work until the machine has cooled off again. Anyone
have any guesses on this? The left side was definitely out because of
the connector. The other thing that makes me think it's the relay is
that the cover was off of it, so somebody may have been fooling with it
at some point in it's past. The way things are going I'm gonna have
the database full of maverick problems (and hopefully solutions). :)

Check the points on the GI relay, be sure where the GI relay is soldered
down is still soldered down good. Won't hurt to clean off the old solder and
re-do it. LTG :)

As an update, I replaced the next connector down on the GI chain and
now both sides of the backbox work. Thanks for all of the help. The
Mav is very close to being operational--just have to replace 17 drop
targets (doh!). That should be interesting.
