I am trying to determine the largest SD card that a Tungsten E can handle.
Somebody I talked to said that they thought the Tungsten E could only handle
SD cards up to 128 MB or maybe 256 MB. However a website I found yesterday
via Google said that Palm was making a 512 MB card that would work in the
Tungsten E. Since SD is a multi-vendor standard, I'm assuming that if a Palm
SD card of 512 MB works in a Tungsten E, another vendor's 512 MB card would
also work. (Please correct me if I'm wrong!) Unfortunately, I haven't been
able to find the webpage that talked about the Palm 512 MB SD card again.
I also saw a year-old newsgroup post a few minutes ago that specifically
said that a Tungsten E would be able to read a 1 GB or even a 2 GB SD card.
I sent an inquiry to Palm asking about this issue and was told that a
Tungsten E can only handle up to 256 MB.
At this point, I don't know WHAT to believe any more! Even Palm is providing
conflicting information - 512 vs 256 - so I thought I'd ask here.
Has anyone been able to read *AND* write any of these in their Tungsten E?
- 256 MB
- 512 MB
- 1 GB
- 2 GB (not sure if these are available yet)
Also, would the brand of SD card make any difference? For example, if a 1 GB
SanDisk SD works, can I be sure that a 1 GB Kingmax will work?
I would really like to get a reliable answer on this issue since I would
like to get a 1 GB SD card for my Tungsten E.

No problem.

Not available when I bought my 256MB, which is probably why PalmOne also
has no information on them. That is, PalmOne has not tested cards this big
with the T|E.

Mine will not do so properly. It will handle a 512 (Panasonic) as long
as I do not use more than 50% of it. Repeatedly, the T|E will lose it if
I hand it more than 256 to chew on. Sounds like the folks at Palm were
being straight with you. I have several 256 cards that function fine and
give no problems and I have never had any problems with cards of lesser
size.
Units manufactured more recently than my 1.5 yr old unit *may* have
solved the pointer problem or mapping error, but that would be pure
speculation on my part.

It was a time of great turmoil. The strong preyed on the weak, dogs

I use a 512MB card in my TE without any problems. From what I've seen
and heard 1 or 2 GB problems should be no problem.

Sandisk has a reputation for making cards that are slow and unreliable
on Palm devices but other than that, most SD cards should work
regardless of their brand.

I have all of these. No problems so far.

Not seen or tried.

I have tried several different brands (Lexar, PNY, SanDisk, PQI) and several
different manufacturers (Toshiba, SanDisk, Unknown). All worked fine. The
only significant difference I have seen is in the write speeds. Reads seem
to be fine on all of them.

Did you ever install the SD IO update? It was posted 9/11/03, and
supposedly provides "Support for current and future SDIO products."

Thank you all very much for your replies to my question. I know feel MUCH
better about the prospects of making a 1 GB card work with my Tungsten E.
When Palm sends me their followup questionaire about the help they gave me,
I will be sure to tell that what I have learned; perhaps they can give their
support staff the correct answers to that question so that no one is given
false information again, at least with respect to that question.

I've been using a 512 filled to capacity in my Tungsten E. No problems at
all. You need to download a patch from Palm.
