Balanced input is generally considered better because it has a much higher rejection of interference. It works by having two signals, one positive going, the other negative. Most interference adds equally to both, but is cancelled out because only the difference matters. It is, however, considerably more expensive to engineer, because much of the circuitry has to be doubled-up.
