Biggest Reason to Buy Clone or Build

Many big system builders are no longer shipping XP install CDs with their
systems.
If a system doesn't come with an XP install CD then don't buy it. Get one
that has the OS release CD.

Your right, but Dell does! I personally have a self custom built machine.
Our Family has recently bought 2 Dells and I can tell you...they are very
good, well documented, easy to put together (due to excellent pictorial
instructions) and include all the disks you need including a Windows XP disk
that is customized by Dell so you do not need to enter the long CDKEY. Nor
do you need to Activate the software.
It has been a very pleasant experience to this point.

Having lurked in this ng for a long time, the general opinion seems to agree
with your sentiments.........however, the problems seem to start when
customer care/support is needed.

I guess if you're lucky enough to buy a pc that runs perfectly from day one
(or you're capable of troubleshooting it yourself) then Dell machines are
probably the best built there are.

Another stupid post for the Dell newsgroup, since Dell DOES supply the XP
CD.

More cluelessness proven!

There is nothing wrong with a Dell IF they supply an OS install CD. Not an
image copy or restore CD but a real OS install CD that one can clean install
with. Who does and who doesn't changes with time and is different by model.
Always ask and confirm and if it's not part of the deal then don't make the
deal. Some salesmen will play symantic games and try and claim a recovery
CD is an OS install CD; it is NOT. Badger em until you get a straight
answer and better is to get it in writing.

If you want a TabletPC then you are SOL as NONE come with an OS install CD.
You can point the big nasty finger at MS for that one.

Dell provides the full OS CD plus (now) a hidden restore partition on the
hard drive, so there are two choices or escape valves.

The Sony I just released had a hidden partition (that was corrupt), and
restore DVDs - but those included ALL of the bloatware, not unlike the
Compaqs I've seen. HPs allegedly have a restore partition (on at least
some), but I've not seen any restore CDs for them - though they may, like
Compaq, use them.

Gateways have a version of the OS CD, but (the ones I have seen) have what
appear to be proprietary directories on the discs.

The dood needs to stop sparkin' the bong.

Yes in most cases that seems to be true. A sales point for Dell.

Such useful information always brings emotional ontbursts from resident NG

How was your post useful. You posted in the Dell newsgroup that many
vendors don't provide the CD. Dell does, so your post was, at best,
irrelavant, at worst, stupid.

I was able to load up to Windows XP...Delete the C drive, repartition in 2
partitions and load Windows XP with the disk provided. It looked exactly the
same during the load except it did not ask for the CD Key.

Your right...they don't provide it...I guess It miraculously appeared in my
hand and worked like Windows XP (even though it did say Dell) and setup just
like a raw Windows XP setup (without the original dell settings and
software) because I thought it would do so.
Now who is STUPID?

Stalker?

Just don't like to be proved wrong.

Still waiting for you to tell me how NOT upgrading your BIOS can destroy
your motherboard.

And the Dell "Restore" CD functions perfectly well to install Windows XP on
another brand of computer, FWIW. Asks for the CD key then. That's the restore
CD that comes with the Dimension 2400, BTW... Ben Myers

I do not know if it works for another computer. I can only say that it
worked on my Daughters Dimension 2400 to format, repartition, and load a
"raw" windows XP load without setups from Dell.

Yes, because it is just an XP disk. Nothing else.

It will work on another machine as long as you have the key. All the Dell
XP CDs will.

Hmm..I can think of an even better one. Dell is exporting American
jobs overseas. Dont be fooled by companys nicer description
'outsourcing'. Its un-American and they have lost my support.

Where do you think the components come from on your locally assembled PC?

I found out in the early 80's when I was laid off from one printed
circuit board company after another, and watched them close their
doors, as Asia took over that market. Today, the problem of exporting
jobs seems more severe, or at least is talked about more, it's even a
campaign issue.

Where do you get all your American made computer parts from? What kind of
car do you drive? I'll bet it contains a few non-US made parts. Not
trying to flame, just making a point.

Outsourcing - oh my. I'm in Victoria BC Canada and guess what - after
working for the provincial government for 29 years my job is being
outsourced to EDS (mine and 350 others) - the EDS head company is in
Texas. But all they have to do is incorporate a company here in Victoria
and everything is fine. Except that I am having a very hard time
accepting that I now have to go work for a private company after 29
years. Contract signing between EDS and our government is being held up
again while our privacy commissioner makes a ruling. And a judge in the
US has now struck down part of the patriot act. Hopefully, all this will
take at least 5 years and I will be able to retire still in my current
postion, or even better, election next May may boot these privatising
idiots out.

But the Govt is outsourcing in its own country. At least you won't
lose your employment, right?
