From x86-secret.com, it seems that AMD is going to ditch both Socket 940 and 939 after 2.4 GHz A64 and A64-FX. Both 2.4 GHz+ A64/A64-FX will be made for Socket 939.

However, I don't understand why they are gonna make a A64 without x86-64 support for Socket 754

Can't keep track of what socket goes with what Cpu.

740 ? 749 ? you mean 940/939. 754 is here to stay, as is 939 once available. 940 isnt going anywhere either, as Opteron 1xx remains s940, and Athon FX is just an Opteron 1xx; same performance, same price. So what is the problem ?

Hmmm the idea of a 90nm XP chip sounds interesting to me.
Extend the life of my current system quite some way.
