Im planning to buy a new laptop in late May/June and my current budget is 1000dlls + taxes. I was wondering if the aditional $200 I require to buy the G73JH-RBBX05 bestbuy model are woth it. The thing is that it's a gift from my dad (the last one as he said) and you know that psicological $1000 barrier. He thinks that $1200 is just too much for a laptop. I have those $200 but he considers that it's a waste of money so... do you thing the G60JX is as good as the G73JH (I know it is not :'( ...)? and if not, what's the real performance margin between both?

G73JH RBBX05

Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz 6MB cache
6GB DDR3 RAM
500GB 7200 RPM HDD
ATi Mobility Radeon 5870 1GB GDDR5
17.3" High-definition widescreen LED-LCD (1600 x 900)

G60JX RBBX05

Intel Core i5 420M 2.26 GHz 3MB cache
4GB DDR3 RAM
500GB 7200 RPM HDD
nVidia GeForce GTS 360M 1GB GDDR5
16" Widescreen LED-backlit LCD (1366 x 768)

It's really the G73JH worth all the arguing and the extra $200?

I'd say the G73JH is a good deal for an additional $200. You are getting an i7, 2GB of additional RAM, bigger screen, and a GPU that is right on par with the 360m. If you can swing it, I'd go with that.

Yeah, I know that on paper it appears as if it's a huge difference, 5870 being the best GPU out there, and of course the i7 is a quad/pseudo-oct, and those 2GB more of RAM, but in reallity what's the real difference? I would use it mainly for basic stuff, web surfing, programming, web design, visual design and A LOT of gaming.

I say that because some people are saying that the i7 with turboboost reaches 2.28 GHz when using two cores while the i5 runs at 2.33 GHz when using two cores, and that, for the moment, a faster dualcore is better for gaming. Also, the 5870 only has a 128 bit bus so is not the huge difference one wouls expect. Also the 360M has CUDA and physx support and some games are made to run better on nvidia cards...

Go for G73,no single doubts about it.
Faster CPU,more RAM,better VGA and a better display.
I don't know where you are getting those infos but about the CPU,well most games are GPU limited so you will benefit from a better VGA compared to CPU.
Also some games are optimized for quad core so i7 would be a better choice.
about comparing 5870M and 360M,although 5870M has 128 bit bus interface,it performs significantly better than GTS 360M.
It supports DX11 and eyefnity too, also can you exactly mention the games which are made to run better on nvidia cards and in which of them a GTS 360M beats a 5870M ?

Not that the 360M beats a 5870M... that's NEVER happening. All that "the way it's meant to be played" are games that were developed in colaboration with nvidia...

I want a long term gaming laptop, if that's possible. I bought a few months ago a Toshiba that was on clearance that had a 230M and while I could play some games on high I get really frustrated with that machine because of low FPS or med-low textures or lower resolutions. Also that Core 2 Duo T6600 is a pretty crappy CPU if you ask me... And cause my dad wanted that machine for work I gave that one to him and he promised he would buy me one...

That's mostly advertising if you ask me,because it mostly depends on the video card.

Anyway Going from a T6600/230M to an i7 720/5870M would give you a great boost in games/apps

Yeah... but again, my dad thinks that's too much. So I was asking whats the real diference between these two systems... in general apps and gaming.

Between T6600/230M and i7/5870M? there is a huge difference between them in both CPU and GPU tasks, the later one performs way better

In gaming and multitasking the difference is noticeable.
5870M performs between a desktop HD 5750 and HD 5770 whereas a GTS 360M performs a little faster than a desktop 8800GTS 640M,so the difference is noticeable
