Brother 440-cn scanner will not scan

Hello,
I can not get the scanner to work from my windows 7 pro desktop either with windows scanner fax application or Brother's control center application.
It does print, is a networked printer (ethernet), can ping the ip address, and is only an ethernet switch (5 feet of cable) away from this desktop.
It has worked in the past.
When attempt to scan from 440-cn "scan" button, receive the message "check connection".

Try changing the cable and see if that helps, i.e. the cable could have went bad.
