I posted this at PSUs and cases, but noone replied, so I though I'd post it here.
Is it OK to connect and disconnect case 12V fans while the computer is running? Is it better if I connect one fan after the other instead of all of them at once? I have a 400W no-name PSU if it matters...
I'm a nuclear reactor cooling system programmer, if you see me running, it's probably already too late.
i sometimes connect them while the comp is running, although its not the most kosher thing to do i have yet to fry a psu or mobo by doing this. So whether it be a 3 pin mobo header or a 4 pin molex connecter you should be peachy .

Well if you think about it, it's not really different than adjusting the speed of a fan which uses a switch (i.e. not a variable resistor knob thingy) such as my TT Volcano 7+. (low/med/high) I'm sure there must be a point when flicking the switch when it's technically OFF, although only for a fraction of a second.

Its a bad idea. Funny thing is that diiconnecting is worse than connecting. The colapsing field is more likely to do damage than the inrush current. It will hurt any psu, but is far more critical as you near the max of the psu.
Its only bad if you have a weak PSU. A sudden drop in charge for the fan while the comp is on a load would cause drop in vdimm, vcore, and vcc. Thus, cause a crash. I do it all the time and yet seem my box crash.
